Sami Zayn is one of WWE’s most beloved star with his incredible personality, in-ring ability and natural charisma catapulting him to main event stardom over the past year.
However, Zayn has found himself involved in some international conflict over the past five years with the former NXT Champion reportedly refusing to attend WWE’s PLE events in Saudi Arabia due to their on-going conflicts with his homeland of Syria.
Without delving to deep into an area that I am not fully qualified to educate you on, Syria and Saudi Arabia had frozen diplomatic relations for over a decade after Riyadh cut ties with Syria over it’s governments handling of the Syria Civil War.
During this time WWE has held multiple live events in Saudi Arabia with Zayn absent for all events, leading to reports and speculation that he was morally objecting to the shows due the issues between Syria and Saudi Arabia and also the latter’s human rights record particularly in it’s treatment of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In 2023, months after Syria was readmitted into the Arab League, Saudi Arabia would resume diplomatic discussions with Syria and just two months later Zayn would attend his first WWE x Saudi Arabia PLE, competing in the main event of the 2023 Crown Jewel show.
However, appearing on After The Bell with Corey Graves, Zayn would shoot down rumours that he had refused to partake in previous events for these reasons, stating:
“First of all, the fact that I haven’t been there in a few years, and that there’s been so much speculation as to why I’m not going and what’s the political reasoning, this and that. I won’t get into all of it, but I’ll tell you 99.9% of what you’ve read online about this subject, completely fabricated, people assuming things and then running with those assumptions and adding on to them. It’s wild. I think it’s anytime they can’t get a concrete answer, that’s kind of what tends to happen. I think that’s like human nature, almost.” [H/t to WrestlingNews.Co]
These comments were met with a mixed reaction online, however, the story has taken another turn as WWE has removed Zayn’s episode of ATB from YouTube and the WWE Network, only reuploading the episode after removing these comments from Zayn.
There is no information on if this was at the request of WWE officials, the Saudi Arabia Investment Group or Zayn himself but what we do know is that somebody didn’t want these comments sticking around.
