R-Truth is grateful for his time with the 24/7 Championship in WWE.
The 24/7 Title was created in May of 2019, and while Titus O’Neil was the first to hold the belt, the day would end with R-Truth as champion. In 2021, R-Truth reached his 50th title reign when he regained the belt from Bad Bunny, and his feud with Drake Maverick over the belt provided WWE fans with plenty of laughter, especially when Truth interrupted Maverick’s real life wedding and later showed up at his honeymoon.
Even after his time with the title was through, R-Truth served as minister at a double wedding that featured multiple 24/7 Title changes of its own.
Speaking on the a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, Truth opened up about the beginnings of the 24/7 Title, admitting that it may not have been as aesthetically pleasing as some of WWE’s other championship belts.
“They gave me a call. They called me and said ‘Hey, they want you to go to SmackDown.’ No, I was on SmackDown as a matter of fact, they want you to go to Raw and do a backstage promo. Didn’t tell me what it was. When I got to Raw. I saw Mick [Foley] pull that thing out of the bag like that right. And everybody said that thing was ugly. Everybody thought it was ugly. Nobody even liked it. It had a different look, we’re gonna say that. It just looked different.”
“Y’all Gave Me An Opportunity To Make Things Funny” – R-Truth
Over time, some fans became critical of WWE’s 24/7 Title segments, calling the skits repetitive. Eventually, the title was retired when Nikki Cross won the championship only to throw it in the trash. Former WWE star Jeff Hardy even went as far as to say he was “ashamed” to take part in the 24/7 Championship segments.
According to Truth, however, the segments were a joy to perform, and he loved the ability to make people laugh with his antics.
“I like laughing I like being funny. And y’all give me an opportunity to make things funny. That was just my playground right that moment. All the things myself, the writers was coming up with was just like, we [were] just hitting home runs. There was no rules when it came to 24/7 title man. If it was rules, we broke them all and I think people were just loving that.”
Elsewhere on the podcast, R-Truth revealed that Damian Priest fought for him to join The Judgment Day.
