Following the return of Vince McMahon to WWE’s Board of Directors, the company has become shrouded in uncertainty.
While the man himself has insisted that he’s only back with the company to help with a potential sale, rumours about his true involvement behind the scenes are running wild. Even before the former Chairman was officially back onboard, it was reported that some within the company “wanted out.”
Some Backstage Fear Further Cuts Following Vince McMahon’s Return
One of the features of Vince McMahon’s final years in charge of WWE were vast talent cuts. The waves of releases trigged the initial speculation that the company could be heading for a sale. It has now been reported that with McMahon back, there are fears that more cuts could be on the way. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that “everyone’s worried” backstage.
“The morale was much better [without Vince McMahon]. Now, everyone’s worried again, because it’s like if Vince is in charge and they’re trying to sell, does that mean they’re going to start doing cuts again?”
It has also been revealed that WWE co-CEO Nick Khan stands to make millions of dollars should the company be sold. Conrad Thompson claimed that when he joined WWE in August 2020, Khan had an agreement which would see him net a huge payday if he oversaw a sale. The deal is said to be worth more than AEW’s yearly TV rights deal. It is believed that AEW’s deal is worth around $19 million per year.
Following Vince McMahon’s initial retirement from WWE in July, 2022 the company brought back a number of stars he released. This has included the likes of Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Karrion Kross, Scarlett and more.
It was also reported on January 9th that Chelsea Green has re-signed with WWE.
