On January 5th, 2023, the news many suspected was coming was finally confirmed. Vince McMahon is taking steps to return to WWE.
While it had been reported in December that he was intent on returning, confirmation came just days into the new year. As WWE’s majority shareholder, McMahon elected himself back onto the Board of Directors, and brought with him former co-presidents Michelle Wilson and George Barrios. The power-play would see McMahon replace three current board members, assume control of the company and reportedly look to sell.
The report and subsequent statement from Vince McMahon left many stunned, while some within the company were said to be “floored” by the news.
WWE Employees Looking To Leave If Vince McMahon Returns
A further report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider has now offered more insight into the mood within WWE. Including suggestions that some are looking to leave if the former Chairman assumes control of the company once more.
“It pretty much shocked everyone we have spoken with. I would say that except for the most inner circle, this absolutely took them by surprise.”
Johnson added that morale has increased significantly since McMahon “retired” back in July, while there is now significant trepidation backstage.
“The company morale has gone up exponentially since Vince “retired” so a lot of people are wondering what things will look like in the days ahead. Lots of trepidation for sure. We’ve heard from some who have said if he’s back, they want out, but whether that actually happens remains to be seen.”
Vince McMahon retired from his role with WWE in July 2022 after a string of sexual misconduct claims were made against him, while it is alleged that he paid more than $12 million in secret settlements to supress the allegations.
This was followed by a report in December which revealed that McMahon is refusing to meet legal demands of two women he allegedly sexually assaulted. One of the women is former referee Rita Chatterton, who is seeking $11.75 million in damages for an alleged rape committed by McMahon back in 1986. It is also alleged that the former WWE Chairman sexually assaulted a spa owner at a resort in California in 2011.
