Tony Khan is looking to do all he can to make sure that Sting gets the send-off that he deserves.
When The Icon made his entrance at Daily’s Place at Winter is Coming 2020, many were aware that this would be the final run and the retirement match would not be that far away. Towards the end of 2023, the date was set for March 3rd at AEW Revolution in Greensboro, North Carolina at the historic Greensboro Coliseum.
For Khan, this is all about making sure that the legendary career of the Hall of Famer is done correctly. Previous reports have stated that Sting pretty much has complete creative control on his retirement and Khan would book anyone in AEW or available for the AEW as the final opponent.
Speaking with Fanatics View, Khan complimented The Icon for being modest about the last match and having to remind the legend of his status in the wrestling world:
“I love having Sting come in and brainstorm with us. Also, working with Sting, he’s one of the most selfless people and I find that I have to push him sometimes and have to remind him, ‘You’re Sting, it’s all about you!’ So, I do feel that this run of Sting being undefeated and what he’s done here in AEW is very special. I’m sad that it’s coming to an end. I’m very sad that Sting will be retiring, but it’s remarkable that Sting is out there over 60 years old.
Despite being in his 60s, the former World Champion has refused to take it easy in his final years in the ring, jumping off of ladders and balconies and crashing through tables. Noting the increased risk-taking and looking back on the run as a whole, Khan believes that this is the best The Icon has ever been:
“Sting is doing more crazy things in his 60s than he’s ever done before. Sting in AEW is this extreme version of Sting. He has gone from being ‘The Franchise,’ ‘The Icon,’ to a Hardcore icon, and some of my favorite Sting matches of his entire career, and I say this just as a wrestling fan, not only is the owner of AEW, I honestly mean this from the bottom of my heart, I think some of the best Sting matches he’s ever had have been in AEW and that’s one of the greatest careers of all time.
When you see Sting today, he’s so happy, the locker room has so much respect for him, and we’re so happy to be able to give him this great send-off.”
Tony Khan has also previously stated that Sting’s most recent run is the greatest of his career.
Tony Khan has recently opened up about AEW expanding its PPV schedule.
Tony Khan Is Proud To Be A Part Of A Historic Occasion
Aware that this day would be coming, Khan has previously discussed the final match in previous interviews. Recognising the magnitude of what will be taking place at Revolution, Tony Khan has previously described Sting’s retirement match as “one of wrestling’s biggest moments.”
H/t to Fightful.
