One former personality opened up about Vince McMahon‘s edict to the commentary team during a poorly-received WWE event.
Hell in a Cell 2019 saw Seth Rollins face off against The Fiend in the main event in Sacramento, CA. Bathed in red light, the match saw Rollins hit multiple curb stomps on The Fiend before employing the use of a toolbox, a chair and a sledgehammer to do damage to Bray Wyatt‘s alter ego. In the end, the match was stopped without a clear victor after Rollins used the sledgehammer.
Fans were enraged by the result, and made their discontent known with chants of “bullsh*t,” “refund,” and even “AEW.”
Former WWE personality Matt Camp hosted the Hell in a Cell watchalong on YouTube that year, and speaking in a recent video on his own YouTube channel, he opened up about the experience of being in the arena on that night. He began by recalling Raw commentator Vic Joseph leaving Vince McMahon hanging during a high five attempt.
“I went to catering, and catering was right next to Gorilla. I come in and I’m following behind Vic Joseph, who was on commentary. It was his short run calling Raw. I’m following behind him, and he’s walking up the ramp towards Gorilla. Vince is coming the other way. Vince is skipping, he’s giddy. He goes to high five Vic, and Vic blows him off. Now it’s me and Vince. I’m there a month. I’m going, ‘Uhhh.’ He doesn’t know I’m there and he keeps going.”
“Vince McMahon Loved The Crowd Reaction” – Matt Camp On Hell In A Cell 2019 Backlash
According to Camp, Vince McMahon loved the crowd response to Hell in a Cell 2019 and forced the commentary team to stay at their desk despite fans throwing things in the arena. He continued:
“I found out that Vince made the commentators stay out there and Sacramento and that crowd was so pissed. They’re throwing stuff. I think Vic was upset about that. ‘Why are you leaving me out there to get pelted with crap?’ Vince loved the crowd reaction.”
