Tony Khan has elaborated on how much he takes fan feedback into consideration and whether he had considered a change in the long-term plans given recent comments.
Back at Revolution, Jon Moxley retained the World Championship over Cope with a match that saw multiple interference spots and Christian Cage take the pin after cashing in his opportunity mid-match. The booking was met with heavy criticism from the fans as they felt that it was both the wrong choice of main event and left Revolution falling flat despite the show being well-received up until that point.
At Dynasty, Moxley once again put the World Championship on the line, this time against Swerve Strickland. Much like the previous pay-per-view, Mox was able to retain the title over the fan favourite, this time with help from The Young Bucks, who made their return to AEW for the first time in six months.
At the Dynasty post-show media scrum, it was pointed out that once again there were a lot of fans who reacted negatively to the main event. Asked about this and whether he considered “calling an audible”, Tony Khan spoke about the result, fan feedback and The Young Bucks:
“Absolutely, I take that into consideration. We had a lot of great moments for the fans tonight. Swerve was the more popular man in the house tonight, the fans really behind Swerve. You had two of AEW’s greatest World Champions having this match and obviously the return of the Young Bucks spoiled what was a great World Championship match on a night where there were a lot of fan favourite moments. That was obviously not necessarily the outcome that a lot of people were hoping for.
But on the other hand, I do think that Jon Moxley has been from the very beginning of AEW one of the most important figures from the very first pay-per-view we ever did. It’s very interesting now, this creates a lot of intrigue to have The Young Bucks come back. I think it’s important to remember we have not seen the Young Bucks in almost six months in AEW.
From the very beginning of AEW, The Young Bucks have been instrumental in the launch of this company. They are the founding fathers of this company. To see them come back this way and really for The Young Bucks get involved and break up what could have been a great moment for the fans, that is consistent with the kind of character we’ve seen from the Young Bucks in recent years.”
Tony Khan Believes Dynasty Main Event Creates “Intriguing Situation”
Continuing, Khan spoke about how there has been interest in The Death Riders storyline and how it has increased with The Bucks’ return:
“I would say it creates an intriguing situation. Certainly, the fans are behind Swerve. I think the fans are every bit as behind Swerve today, after the PPV, as they have been at any point. I think the fans love Swerve. I don’t think the Young Bucks involvement or them screwing him changes that. I do think for tonight it creates an intriguing situation. So I am very aware the fans really love Swerve, he’s one of our most popular stars. Jon Moxley has done a lot of great things for the company, you could argue, not just his history, but recently has done great things for the company.
I was very impressed with not only the match, not only the barbaric street fight that Jon had had a few weeks ago with Adam Copeland and then to get back in the ring so soon after that for the mixed tag match and then again [at Dynasty]. That is enough to put someone out of action permanently, yet alone to come back and have the kind of matches Jon’s had in the past couple of weeks. So there has been a lot of interest in what is happening and there was a lot of support for Swerve tonight. It certainly creates interest with our biggest stars The Young Bucks coming back and wreaking havoc.”
After the show went off the air, Swerve Strickland addressed the fans and fired a jab at Booker T.
Also at the press conference, Tony Khan confirmed that a member of the AEW roster is injured.
In a previous interview, a former AEW star called for Jon Moxley’s World Title reign to end.
