Jon Moxley

Jon Moxley with the AEW World Title

Jon Moxley 2022: Net Worth, Family, Income

Jonathan David Good, better known as either Dean Ambrose or Jon Moxley, is an active professional wrestler and occasional actor. He was born and raised in the East End of Cincinnati, Ohio. Moxley grew up as a passionate fan of wrestling and it didn’t take him long to get into the business. By age eighteen, he was training under Les Thatcher at the Heartland Wrestling Association.

In 2004, he made his debut under the name Jon Moxley, losing to Ala Hussein at an HWA event in Ohio. A few years later he started making a name for himself on the independent circuit, working for reputable companies such as Ring of Honor, Dragon Gate USA, and Combat Zone Wrestling. His critical acclaim from the independent circuit soon led to a call from World Wrestling Entertainment, who signed him to a developmental deal in April 2011.

Under WWE employment, Moxley was sent to development territory Florida Championship Wrestling where he underwent a name change, now known as “Dean Ambrose.” He would spend over a year in FCW feuding with fellow trainees and established workers, most notably William Regal, whom he would reunite with over a decade later in All Elite Wrestling. Dean Ambrose was originally meant to join the WWE main roster in March of 2012 as part of a feud with Mick Foley. However, plans were scrapped for the Ambrose/Foley storyline due to Foley not being cleared to wrestle. Ambrose had to wait until November of the same year to make his main roster debut.

At Survivor Series 2012, Dean Ambrose debuted on the main roster alongside Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. The three would form an alliance known as “The Shield” and claim themselves to be hellbent against injustice in the WWE. Initially, they were linked with CM Punk, who at the time was the WWE Champion. They soon parted company from Punk, however, and forged their own destiny as one of the most dominant three-man groups of the 2010s. The Shield went on a seven-month winning streak as a faction which ended on the June 14th, 2013 edition of Smackdown, where they lost to Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan and Kane.

As part of The Shield, Ambrose would find himself feuding with top factions such as The Wyatt Family, Evolution and the Authority. It was their feud with the Authority which led to the end of The Shield on the June 2nd, 2014 edition of Monday Night Raw. On this episode, Seth Rollins turned his back on the Shield by hitting Roman Reigns with a chair and joining the Authority.

For much of 2014 and 2015, Ambrose feuded with Rollins, vowing to get revenge for the betrayal. Their feud ended at Money in the Bank 2015, where Ambrose lost to Rollins in a Ladder Match for the WWE Championship. After this loss, Ambrose would continue a successful singles run in the company, picking up championships and accomplishments along the way. He won the Intercontinental Championship at TLC 2015 and would come within an inch of winning the 2016 Royal Rumble, being the final person eliminated in the match by winner Triple H.

At Money in the Bank 2016, Ambrose would win the Money in the Bank Ladder match, winning him a shot at the WWE Championship which he cashed in later that night against Seth Rollins. In this match, Dean Ambrose beat Rollins and claimed his first World Championship. He would lose the championship four months later to AJ Styles at Backlash 2016.

In 2017, The Shield would reunite after Seth Rollins apologised to Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns for his betrayal a few years earlier. The Shield would wrestle teams like the Usos and the New Day, but the reunion was short-lived due to Ambrose suffering a triceps injury in December of 2017, putting him on the shelf for nine months.

Ambrose returned in August of 2018 and picked up where he left off in teaming with Seth Rollins. The duo would win the Tag Team Championships, but immediately after doing so, Ambrose would attack his partner Rollins. Ambrose turned heel and claimed that being part of the Shield made him weak, which entered him into a feud with Rollins. This feud would last until the beginning of 2019 when it was announced that Ambrose was not going to renew his contract with WWE.

After one more Shield reunion, Ambrose departed WWE on April 30th, 2019. In an out-of-character interview on Chris Jericho’s podcast Talk is Jericho, Ambrose would say that he left WWE due to his character being given “hokey” material.

On May 1st, 2019, Ambrose (now known once again as “Jon Moxley”) would post a video on social media which showed him breaking out of prison, signifying that he was free from WWE. Three weeks later, Jon Moxley showed up at Double or Nothing 2019, the inaugural Pay-Per-View of All Elite Wrestling, attacking Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega after the culmination of their main event match. This led to him feuding with Kenny Omega, and then eventually with Chris Jericho, the latter of which resulted in Moxley becoming AEW’s second-ever World Champion.

Jon Moxley held onto the AEW World Championship for 277 days, defending it against the likes of Mr. Brodie Lee, Eddie Kingston and Lance Archer. He was eventually beaten by Kenny Omega at Winter is Coming 2020, succumbing to the underhanded tactics used by Omega and his manager Don Callis. Moxley challenged Omega to a rematch for the AEW World Championship at Revolution 2021. The match was contested under Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch rules. Moxley lost this encounter, which took him out of the World Championship picture for the time being.

Outside of the title picture, Jon Moxley would form a tag team with former enemy Eddie Kingston which led to a critically acclaimed match against The Young Bucks at Double or Nothing 2021. Throughout his AEW career, Moxley was also part of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s roster, which led to several NJPW talent appearing against Moxley on AEW’s flagship show Dynamite, including Minoru Suzuki, Yugi Nagata and Karl Anderson. In October 2021, Moxley was granted a leave of absence after entering a rehabilitation facility to help with his alcoholism.

Upon successfully beating his alcohol addiction, Jon Moxley made his return to AEW in January of 2022, immediately being confronted by Bryan Danielson. After wrestling Danielson at Revolution 2022, the two formed a faction called The Blackpool Combat club, with recent AEW signing William Regal. The Blackpool Combat Club would soon recruit Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli into its ranks and become one of the more dominant factions in All Elite Wrestling.

In the main event of Forbidden Door 2022, Jon Moxley would replace the injured CM Punk and defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi to become Interim AEW World Champion. The “interim” championship then became permanent on the August 24th edition of Dynamite after Moxley pinned World Champion CM Punk in a match which lasted just over 3 minutes. A rematch was announced for All Out 2022 which was won by CM Punk.

In a bizarre turn of events, Punk was then stripped of the title a few days later after his suspension following a backstage brawl after the All Out event. This led to Jon Moxley winning a tournament for the vacant AEW World Championship, where he defeated Bryan Danielson in the finals at Grand Slam 2022, thus starting his third run as AEW World Champion.

At the time of writing, Jon Moxley is still the AEW World Champion. He has successfully defended his championship against “Hangman” Adam Page and Penta El Zero Miedo, and is next scheduled to defend against Maxwell Jacob Friedman at Full Gear 2022.

Through his contract with All Elite Wrestling, Jon Moxley makes approximately $900,000 per year.
