Sami Zayn Injured, WWE Injury Crisis Worsens

Sami Zayn at WWE Elimination Chamber

Sami Zayn is struggling with an injury.

On the August 7th episode of WWE Raw, Sami Zayn was scheduled to take part in a huge main event. The star had been due to team with Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes to take on the Judgment Day. However, he was attacked backstage by JD McDonagh and replaced in the match by Shinsuke Nakamura.

Fans were quick to notice that Zayn’s elbow was badly swollen, and the match was seemingly changed due to the substantial bursa sac on his elbow. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the nasty-looking issue. Alvarez said it remains to be seen how long Zayn will be out of action.

“Yeah, maybe even bigger. I mean, it was gigantic. And he’s holding his elbow when they did the beat down. So I mean, he ran near at the beginning, I guess I’d have to go back and look at his elbow here in the beginning segment, which, you know, I didn’t do at the time, but man, that thing looked disgusting. Guess we’ll see how long he’s out of action for.”

Sami Zayn joins tag team partner Kevin Owen on the injured list, KO struggling with a rib injury. Meltzer and Alvarez went on to dive into how the respective injuries could impact booking.

Meltzer: “Right. The whole idea was that, since they decided not to book him for SummerSlam, I mean if he was on SummerSlam, you know, if they booked him for SummerSlam, he would’ve kept working and, and done SummerSlam. But when the decision was made not to put a tag team title match on SummerSlam, they decided to shoot an angle to get him off and give him a little bit of rest. But it was only supposed to be like a short period of rest. That’s why they didn’t take the belts off or anything like that.”

Alvarez: “I mean, Sami was brawling here, so like, if there’s an issue, I think that he could probably do a match to drop the titles. But to me, it’s like you spent all that time and you did that huge match at WrestleMania. I mean, I think they should do whatever they can to not strip them of the titles unless they absolutely have to.”

In a recent interview Sami Zayn provided an update on his injury.

Who Else Is Injured Apart From Sami Zayn?

While Kevin Owens has been dealing with a fractured rib for a few weeks, and working through it, the injury problems for WWE have piled up in recent days. Roman Reigns reportedly got hurt during his match at SummerSlam, and Sonya Deville revealed she’s suffered a serious knee injury.

It’s also believed that Liv Morgan has been hit with a shoulder injury, and Braun Strowman is another long-term absentee.

While Kofi Kingston returned to action on Raw, his New Day partner Big E remains on the sidelines and is unsure whether he’ll ever wrestle again.
