Mick Foley believes WWE should have given this AEW star a run as champion.
Speaking at Comic-Con in Northern Ireland (courtesy of Monopoly Events), WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley spoke about his history with the WWE Championship, admitting that he was always a transitional champion.
“I held the title three times for a total of 42 days — like I was the transitional champion. I’m glad I had it, but I don’t think I’d be thinking of my career as any lesser if I’d never held it.”
Continuing, Foley declared that current AEW star Claudio Castagnoli should have been given the chance to hold the WWE Championship during his time with the company as Cesaro.
“Cesaro should have been given a run with the title that’s because Cesaro reminded me of like the old school Jack Brisco, Dory Funk, traveling champion who could literally have a good match with anyone.” (h/t WrestlingInc)
Mick Foley Once Dropped To His Knees To Beg WWE To Give Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli) A Chance
Back in 2021, Foley appeared as a guest on Steve Austin‘s Broken Skull Sessions. At one point in the interview, Foley turned to the camera and highlighted his and Austin’s experience of exceeding expectations. This was followed by Foley dropping to his knees and begging Vince McMahon to give Cesaro a chance. Mrs Foley’s Baby Boy continued, imploring McMahon to “put a rocket ship” on the back of the Swiss Superman as he “wholeheartedly” believes in him.
Castagnoli’s contract with WWE expired in early 2022 and he joined All Elite Wrestling in June of that same year, making his debut at Forbidden Door.
Looking back on his own career, Mick Foley named one star who without question hit the hardest.
