Jim Ross believes AEW has the perfect star to face Goldberg in his actual farewell match.
Last weekend at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, Goldberg officially retired from wrestling as he competed his final match, wherein Gunther defeated him to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Ring General was dubbed by many as the perfect opponent for Da Man and was a dream match come true. However, many believe the Hall of Famer will still return in the future, like AEW’s Jim Ross.
In a recent Grilling JRepisode, Conrad Thompson expressed that MJF would have been a good final opponent for the Hall of Famer, as the AEW star can run his mouth, great heel, and take bumps. The commentator agreed with his co-host and added that, from what he saw last weekend, he believes Da Man was in great shape and can still wrestle.
Based on what I saw on Saturday, I don’t think it’s over for Bill, if he chooses to do that, financially. I’m sure he’s in great shape. And good for him for that. He’s a player. He’s smart with his money. He’s made a lot of money over the years, which is an amazing accomplishment for a guy that really is not a fan of the business.
But I think in his later years here, he has become more of a fan of the business than many thought that he might back in the day. So, good for him. He delivered. He did what he’s supposed to do. The bottom line was protect Goldberg and get Gunther over. And they accomplished both those things.”
Later in the discussion, the wrestling commentator continued talking about possible opponents for the Hall of Famer if he returns to wrestling, doubling down that Maxwell Jacob Friedman would be a good pick.
There’s a lot of candidates out there that Bill could utilize as his next opponent. And if MJF is one of those guys, well then, you know, I’m not knocking that idea. That’s intriguing to me.”

Jim Ross Gives His Thoughts On How WWE Booked Goldberg’s Final Match
It’s safe to say that Goldberg’s retirement match wasn’t perfect. Although he “passed the torch” to a worthy superstar like Gunther, the Hall of Famer still lost, the feud build-up was short, and his speech was even cut short by NBC. However, the legendary commentator thought the opposite.
In the same episode, Jim Ross shared that the Hall of Famer was booked right in his match and landed a good rival, praising not just the former WCW Champion’s performance but also The Ring General’s.
I think he was booked correctly and not overexposed. He’s with the right opponent. You dress that match up with the right opponent, Bill could certainly be back in the hunt for something. He’s proven that he draws, he still draws. He’s a very unique talent. And so I hope that he does more (…) I thought that they pulled the damn thing off pretty dang well with that match. I was happy for both I was happy for everybody involved. They delivered and I’m a big Gunther fan, he did his part. He did what he was supposed to do.”
