A WWE Hall of Famer has looked back on their involvement in a storyline that would not be repeated in the modern era.
While Kurt Angle is considered one of the greatest in-ring workers of all time and with great comedic timing, his 2005 rivalry with Booker T on SmackDown is not one that would make an appearance in any best-of compilations. Targeting Booker T’s wife Sharmell, Angle made a number of sexually explicit comments directed at the Hall of Famer such as wanting to have “bestiality sex” with her and also stalking Sharmell for multiple weeks.
Addressing the storyline in a May 2023 interview, Kurt Angle stated that he “totally regrets” what took place and that he “didn’t want to be a part of any of it.” Looking back on her involvement in the storyline, Sharmell sees things differently.
“It Didn’t Bother Me”: Sharmell Discusses Infamous WWE Storyline
Discussing the controversial segments with Chris Van Vliet, Sharmell stated that she was not bothered at all by what happened but admitted that it would not take place in the modern era:
“Kurt was stalking me. Because I was so new at that time, I don’t even know, they were like, Okay here’s what you’re doing. Okay. I don’t know who came up with any of that, but I thought it was brilliant. Everybody’s real touchy right now in this day and age. But it didn’t bother me. I thought it was great.
It was interesting, but I don’t know if you could get away with that in this day and age. Everybody’s like, no, we can’t do that. It wouldn’t fly [today]. But because I knew it was acting, you know what I mean? Now, there are some serious situations out there that are like that and I don’t condone that at all, but when it was acting it was okay for me, that’s just me.”
One year after the infamous storyline, the Hall of Famer assisted Booker T in becoming victorious in the King of the Ring tournament and was later coronated as Queen Sharmell.
