Gunther To Miss WWE Payback, Intercontinental Title Match Confirmed

Gunther on WWE Raw

Gunther won’t be wrestling at WWE Payback.

As he stands on the brink of WWE history, it’s been confirmed that Gunther will defend the Intercontinental Title on the September 4th episode of Raw. This means that he won’t be wrestling at the company’s next Premium Live Event, Payback on September 2nd.

On Raw, Gunther will meet Chad Gable who has become something of a thorn in his side. Gable pushed the champion all the way in the lead-up to SummerSlam. He even became the first person to defeat the Gunther in singles action on the main roster, grabbing a count-out win on August 21st.

When Will Gunther Break The Intercontinental Title Record?

Should Gunther defeat Chad Gable he will become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history barring something catastrophic happening in the following days. With the match taking place on September 4th, Gunther will pass the milestone on September 7th.

The official record stands at 454 days and is held by the Honky Tonk Man. During his dominant run, the current champion has passed legends such as Macho Man Randy Savage, The Rock, Shawn Michaels, and Mr Perfect on the all-time list.

The Intercontinental Title was created back in September 1979 and came into being after the North and South American titles were merged — although in reality the latter was fictional.

Pat Patterson was famously the inaugural champion, and Chyna made history in 1999 when she became the first and only woman to hold the title.
