Gunther still isn’t sure what’s in store for him at WrestleMania 40.
Though best known for his time in tag teams such as American Alpha and Alpha Academy, Chad Gable made an attempt to break out as a singles star in the summer of 2023. His feud with record-setting Intercontinental Champion Gunther was highly praised by fans and critics alike, and in August, Gable even handed the Imperium leader his first loss since joining WWE’s main roster.
However, Gable hasn’t been able to capture the Intercontinental Championship and end Gunther’s record-breaking reign. Gable made it clear in a recent interview that he wants to finish his story with the leader of Imperium, and when asked on the BattleGround Podcast if this rivalry could be revisited at WrestleMania 40, Gunther admitted he doesn’t know what’s in store for him on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
“I honestly gotta say, he’s not the only one, I guess. That’s just the life of a champion. A bunch of guys want a piece of them. That being said, I think he’s a phenomenal athlete. He’s a great technician, and the matches we had I think we were phenomenal, and the audience enjoyed them all.
“So if it should come to that, for WrestleMania, then yeah, I’m here for it. But we have to see. I think there’s a few options in the pipeline. I don’t know what’s in store for ‘Mania. But like I said, I think there’s a bunch of guys. That’s just the life of a champion. You are chased by some people that want that prize, and it keeps me on edge.”
In another recent interview, Gunther addressed his dream match with Brock Lesnar being unlikely to happen in the wake of allegations tied to the recent lawsuit against Vince McMahon.
Gunther Is The Longest-Reigning Intercontinental Champion In WWE History
Back in September, Gunther surpassed the Honky Tonk Man’s record as longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time. However, his list of accomplishments shows no sign of slowing.
February 19th marks Gunther’s 619th day as Intercontinental Champion, and as such, the Imperium leader has now surpassed the combined reigns of Pedro Morales. WWE recognizes Morales’ two reigns as Intercontinental Champion as lasting 617 days, though some sources say the combined days he held the belt total 619.
