Did WWE Have Any Plans To Include Jon Moxley As Part Of The WrestleMania 40 Surprises?

Was there ever any intention to use Jon Moxley in the main event of WrestleMania 40?

In one of the most drama-filled and intense main events in WrestleMania history, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns in the chaotic Bloodline Rules match. With chaos advertised ahead of time and interference allowed in one of the biggest WWE matches ever, fans were anticipating a number of shock appearances.

Although the likes of The Rock and John Cena were somewhat expected given the events that have transpired in the past 6 months, arguably the biggest shock of the night was when The Shield’s music rang out through Lincoln Financial Field. As the stadium erupted in shock as the latest ghost from Reigns’ past made its presence felt, many fans admitted that they got caught up in the chaos and thought that Rollins and Moxley had reunited for one night only to take down Reigns, despite the fact that Mox left WWE in 2019 and would sign with AEW later that year.

As Rollins snuck in the ring alone wearing Shield tactical gear, the former World Heavyweight Champion was quickly taken out by Reigns and there was no appearance from the former AEW Champion in the match. Although at one point it seemed as if WWE and AEW working together in this capacity was pretty much impossible, it was continually reiterated that this is a new era of the company. With this in mind and the magnitude of the event, was this plan ever considered?

Tony Khan Confirms Jon Moxley Plans

While being interviewed by ComicBook, Tony Khan was asked if there were ever any intentions of Mox making a WrestleMania return for one night only. Khan responded that there were never any plans as WWE never reached out to him:

Speaking to ComicBook.com, AEW President Tony Khan confirmed that WWE did not reach out to AEW about using Jon Moxley for a one-off appearance during the Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns main event.

Along with his work in AEW, Moxley has also competed for international promotions NJPW and CMLL. Moxley made his main roster debut for WWE in 2012 as Dean Ambrose alongside Rollins and Reigns as part of The Shield. Moxley’s final match in the company saw him compete alongside the faction one final time before departing the promotion after choosing to not renew his contract.

In recent news, Jon Moxley stated that it wouldn’t matter if he won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
