AEW Signs Another Company’s Major Star On Multi-Year Dual Deal, First In History

Tony Khan AEW

AEW has made several high-profile talent acquisitions in recent months. As Tony Khan moves forward with one of his biggest Forbidden Door alliances, a former World Heavyweight Champion has revealed a major update on his future and contract status.

Rey Hechicero, Spanish for Wizard King, is officially All Elite. The near-25-year industry veteran worked around Mexico until signing with CMLL in early 2014. He began working with NJPW two years later, and from 2016-2019 he made a handful of appearances for the original ROH. Hechicero trained over the years with several Monterrey luchadores as well as AEW World Trios Champion Katsuyori Shibata.

The Most Technical Villain built a strong legacy in CMLL and finally captured the World Heavyweight Championship in 2021 by dethroning the legendary Ultimo Guerrero, only for his reign to end at 409 days by current champion Gran Guerrero. Hechicero began to build a following in the United States, eventually debuting for All Elite Wrestling in January 2024 under the new working relationship between AEW and CMLL.

Hechicero’s All Elite debut led to his ROH return in February of this year, for the first time since 2019. The 229 pound grappler joined The Don Callis Family this past June, and one month later it was reported that he had signed with Tony Khan. Now as the alliance between AEW and CMLL expands following a successful summer, Hechicero himself has revealed a major status update.

Hechicero Confirms Special AEW-CMLL Contract

Tony Khan and AEW have signed a few wrestlers to dual contracts in the past, such as with Kevin Knight in NJPW, or Konosuke Takeshita in DDT and NJPW. Now Hechicero has inked a multi-year deal with AEW, while still under contract to CMLL.

Hechicero spoke with FOX Sports Mexico and confirmed reports that he has signed with AEW, but also still with CMLL. The masked heel thanked Khan and CMLL boss Salvador Lutteroth III, and touted himself as the first wrestler with a dual multi-year contract, likely referring to just AEW-CMLL.

“I thank everyone from the media & the fans who had been asking: yes, I can confirm I am part of All Elite Wrestling. I am still linked with CMLL, which is something I want to thank Salvador Lutteroth & Tony Khan for the trust given to me. I am the first wrestler to have a double multi-year deal, and I take that with a lot of responsibility because it reinforces the alliance, how CMLL keeps expanding its wrestling, and of course the global dominance that AEW has,” Hechicero said.

Hechicero worked Friday’s CMLL event in Mexico City, teaming with Angel de Oro for a loss to Mistico and ROH World Champion Bandido. His last ROH match came August 30 during the 2300 Arena bonus show, teaming with Lance Archer to defeat BEEF and LSG, one night after failing to dethrone Bandido at ROH Death Before Dishonor. Two nights before the PPV, The Don Callis Family’s Hechicero, Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, and Josh Alexander defeated JetSpeed and AEW World Tag Team Champions Brodido.
