Roman Reigns will defend his WWE Universal Title against Cesaro at WrestleMania Backlash.
Cesaro initially requested a title match with Reigns two weeks ago but Reigns turned him down, in favour of facing Daniel Bryan. Reigns then defeated Bryan a week later, banishing the former champion from SmackDown.
Roman Reigns opened the special Throwback Edition of SmackDown with Paul Heyman and Jey Uso eulogising the career of Daniel Bryan. The pair were later joined by a returning Jimmy Uso before being interrupted by Cesaro.
It had already been announced that Cesaro would face Seth Rollins on the show, but a surprise appearance from Teddy Long led to the match being made a Number One Contenders match for Reigns’ Universal Title.
The rematch from WrestleMania 37 was a typically high class affair with momentum swinging back and forth. The Usos watched the action unfold from ringside but wouldn’t remain bystanders for long. After an altercation between Jey and Rollins, Jimmy hit Rollins with a Superkick. Cesaro took out Jimmy with a Cross-Body over top rope, before rolling Rollins back in the ring and hitting the Neutralizer for the win.
However, Cesaro wasn’t quite done for the night just yet. Reigns’ was upset with Jimmy Uso after he got involved in the match effectively helping Cesaro. Reigns later called Jimmy to the ring, challenging him to join him or go home. Jimmy went to leave the ring, when Cesaro appeared from nowhere attacking Reigns. Jey ran to his cousins aid, while Jimmy initially resisted. However, he eventually returned to try and help his brother but was beaten down for his troubles. The show went off the air with Cesaro standing tall over his adversaries.
