CM Punk has paid tribute to Eddie Guerrero, crediting the late WWE legend with having a major influence on his career.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Punk recalled working with Guerrero in 2002 for independent promotion IWA Mid-South. At the time, Guerrero had been released from WWE following an arrest for drunk driving and was also dealing with marital issues with his wife, Vickie Guerrero.

“He was real sad. He’d been fired, he’s going through a divorce. He didn’t know when he was going to see his kids,” Punk said. “And when you’re on the top like he was, to go back – and he’s working in indies. There’s that part of you that says, ‘I feel sorry for this guy. He’s here. He’s working with me in this Columbus Hall in Indianapolis.’”

Despite his personal struggles, Guerrero’s professionalism never wavered. Punk remembered how Guerrero’s performances remained world-class, even in the smallest venues.

“But he wrestled me like it was the main event of WrestleMania,” Punk said.

Punk also reflected on the personal bond he formed with Guerrero during that time. Their relationship extended beyond the ring, with Punk often calling Guerrero for advice as he navigated his early years in wrestling.

“I used to be able to just pick up the phone, call him and be like, ‘Hey.’ He taught me that it’s not about moves, it’s about when you do them. He taught me about the connection between your fans and you and making it emotional. He taught me so much. Invaluable experience was learned working with him,” Punk shared.

Guerrero’s lessons clearly left a lasting mark, with Punk crediting the WWE Hall of Famer for helping to shape the style and philosophy that would eventually make him a global star.
