This week’s WWE SmackDown featured a contract signing for Roman Reigns and his three opponents at the Royal Rumble: Randy Orton, LA Knight & AJ Styles.
It was SmackDown at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA with Kevin Patrick & Corey Graves on commentary.
The Royal Rumble contract signing started the show with AJ Styles, LA Knight & Randy Orton signing the contract. Paul Heyman said that Roman Reigns wasn’t going to sign it since they have yet to look at it with a lawyer. Nick Aldis threatened to strip Reigns of the title. Heyman tried to talk to Aldis out of it. AJ Styles & LA Knight exchanged words, which led to a fight between Styles & Knight going all the way to the back. Orton told Heyman that he’d beat Solo Sikoa and remind Roman Reigns about the three most dangerous letters in sports entertainment: R-K-O.
Nick Aldis was shown walking backstage where AJ Styles stopped him and said he wanted a match with LA Knight tonight. Aldis said fine. Aldis was standing outside of Roman Reigns’ dressing room with the contract in his hand.
Match #1: Legado Del Fantasma – Santos Escobar, Angel & Humberto defeated LWO – Carlito, Cruz Del Toro & Joaquin Wilde by pinfall. Escobar did a blind tag and did a rollup on Carlito to win.
Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits were backstage somewhere for a promo about The Final Testament group led by Karrion Kross. Montez Ford said if it’s a fight that you want, they are businessmen and all you have to do is ask. Lashley said that when they find them, they will show you what intimidation looks like.
Prior to the next match, Butch was introduced as Pete Dunne. That means the Butch name is gone, which was teased one week ago on Smackdown.
Match #2: Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate defeated Pretty Deadly – Kit Wilson & Elton Prince by pinfall. Dunne hit the Bitter End on Prince for the win.
Kevin Owens hosted his Kevin Owens Show talk show with US Champion Logan Paul as the guest. Logan said that Owens hitting him with a Stunner at WrestleMania 37 four years ago is what made Logan want to become a WWE Superstar. Owens said he respected what Paul has done, but said Paul was not a true WWE Superstar like Rey Mysterio, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and himself.
Owens said that people knock him down, but he always gets back up from everything. Paul complained about Owens having a cast on his right hand, so Owens said he won’t wear it in their match at the Royal Rumble. Owens took the cast off, so Owens did a cheap shot punch. Owens fought back, they spilled out of the ring and Paul rammed KO’s right hand against the ring post. Owens was in pain as Paul celebrated.
Match #3: Kayden Carter & Katana Chance defeated Unholy Union – Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn by pinfall to retain the Women’s Tag Team Championships. Carter & Chance did their Keg Stand double team move to win. Bayley was on commentary with Damage CTRL.
After the match, Asuka & Kairi Sane presented the champions Carter & Chance with their titles. It was announced later in the show that these teams will have a title match next week.
The Final Testament group of Karrion Kross, AOP, Scarlett & Paul Ellering were shown in some darkened room for a promo. Kross talked about how they aren’t interested in playing games. Kross said they’ll meet them in the ring next week and we’ll see who the All Mighty really are.
Carmelo Hayes was interviewed about his match against Austin Theory stopping last week due to Theory suffering an injury. Hayes said that these things can happen. Theory and Grayson Waller interrupted to talk some trash. Hayes challenged Theory to a match and Waller accepted for Theory. After Hayes left, Theory told Waller he didn’t like Waller doing that.
Match #4: LA Knight defeated AJ Styles by disqualification. Solo Sikoa hit Knight with a Samoan Spike for a DQ. After the match, Solo threw Styles into the ring and Solo hit Styles with a Samoan Spike too.
Solo Sikoa did a promo where he said two down, one to go. Solo called for Randy Orton to get out there now. The main event started after a break.
Match #5: Randy Orton defeated Solo Sikoa by pinfall. Randy Orton won clean with an RKO. Jimmy Uso showed up to distract, so Knight and Styles beat up Jimmy. Solo tried to sneak up behind Orton with an RKO, but Orton was ready for it and hit an RKO for the pinfall win.
After the match, Knight clotheslined Styles in the ring. Orton spun Knight around and Orton hit Knight with an RKO. Styles was stumbling around so Orton hit Styles with an RKO too. Roman Reigns finally appeared in the ring and hit Orton with a Superman Punch.
Reigns finally signed the Royal Rumble contract since Smackdown GM Nick Aldis was at ringside. Reigns dropped the contract on the floor rather than hand it to Aldis. Reigns wanted to hit a Spear on Orton, but Orton was ready and hit an RKO on Reigns. Orton celebrated to end the show.
