WWE SmackDown 2024 logo over arena shot SmackSown

This week’s WWE SmackDown featured Cody Rhodes in tag team action, Tiffany Stratton celebrating, and Shinsuke Nakamura defending the US Title against LA Knight.

It was SmackDown at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon with Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett on commentary. I’m in Canada watching on Netflix for the first time for SmackDown. It’s what most fans outside of the US will be using moving forward.

Paul Heyman was in the ring for a promo celebrating Roman Reigns as the Tribal Chief after his big win over Solo Sikoa on Raw. Heyman called out Cody Rhodes, the WWE Champion. Heyman said that Cody is a credit not just to Smackdown, but to WWE in its entirety. Heyman said because Cody is a great champion, Reigns has let Heyman come out there to talk to Cody face to face. Heyman informed Cody that Reigns wants his title back. Heyman said that this is not a prediction, this is a spoiler: Roman Reigns hereby declares he is entering the 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble with full intentions of winning to fight Cody once again for the championship. Heyman asked Cody what does he want to talk about? Before Cody could say a word, Kevin Owens interrupted. Owens complained about how Cody went on Raw and shook hands with The Rock. Owens complained about Cody shaking hands with Heyman. Owens said that Cody should have let The Bloodline rip Roman Reigns to shreds, but now look what happened. Owens said that Cody is hurting the entire company. Cody Rhodes left the ring, jumped the railing, and went after Owens by fighting on the stairs around the fans. Cody went fighting with Owens into the concourse area. The cameras did not follow him.

In the ring, Paul Heyman turned around, and he was surrounded by Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga of Solo Sikoa’s version of The Bloodline. Jimmy Uso ran out to the ring to make the save for Heyman, who left the ring. Jimmy nailed Fatu with a superkick, punches for Tama, and a superkick for Tama. Jimmy hit a running hip attack on Jimmy and a running hip attack on Tama. Jimmy brought a chair into the ring and he hit Tama in the back with the chair. Jimmy hit Fatu with a chair, but Fatu no sold that and Fatu hit a running elbow smash on Jimmy. Fatu put a chair around Jimmy’s neck. A guy dressed as a referee (not really a referee) went into the ring and Fatu superkicked him. Producer Kenny Dykstra went into the ring and Fatu superkicked him. Cody went back into the ring and he sent Tama out of the ring. Cody fought with Fatu leading to Cody clotheslining Fatu over the top to the floor. Smackdown GM Nick Aldis and other officials were at ringside trying to get Fatu and Tama to back away. Cody checked on Jimmy as the show went to break.

After a break, Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga were shown backstage while some small security guys tried to make them leave. LA Knight showed up to shove Fatu out the door. Knight shoved the door, which impressed SD GM Aldis standing there and Knight said he had a US Title to win.

Match #1: Women’s United States Championship – Chelsea Green (w/Piper Niven) defeated Michin by pinfall. Michin was on offense for most of the match and took out Niven on the floor with a cannonball. Michin jumped off the top with a cross body block, Green rolled through and Green hooked the tights for the pinfall win. After the match, Michin grabbed Green before Green could leave the ring. Niven hit Michin in the back. Michin hit a running senton splash onto Michin. Green and Niven left.

There was a video from earlier in the day when Smackdown GM Nick Aldis was in his office as four tag teams argued about who deserved a shot in the tag team division. Aldis set up two matches: Los Garza vs. Pretty Deadly and Motor City Machine Guns vs. Austin Theory & Grayson Waller.

Match #2: Los Garza – Angel & Berto (w/Santos Escobar & Elektra Lopez) defeated Pretty Deadly – Kit Wilson & Elton Prince by pinfall. When Prince went for a move off the top, Lopez distracted the referee and Escobar crotched Prince on the top turnbuckle. Los Garza hit a double team powerslam and Berto pinned Prince to win.

Match #3: United States Championship – LA Knight defeated Shinsuke Nakamura by disqualification due to Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga attacking Knight. Nakamura hit his knee on an exposed steel turnbuckle, so Knight hit BFT. As Knight tried to cover, that’s when Fatu and Tama attacked.

After the match, Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu beat up Knight. Fatu hit a popup Samoan Drop. Fatu hit a running hip attack on Knight two times in a row. Fatu hit a double jump moonsault off the top on Knight. Cody Rhodes and Jimmy Uso showed up to fight with Fatu and Tama at ringside. Cody and Jimmy beat up Fatu and Tama, so they sent them over the barricade.

Cody Rhodes did a promo telling Nick Aldis not to send them home. Cody said that they are here while Cody and Jimmy are here. Cody wanted a tag team match tonight. Nick Aldis said they’ve got it, so that match is coming up later.

There was a video package about Tiffany Stratton cashing in Money in the Bank on Nia Jax last week on SmackDown. Stratton became the new WWE Women’s Champion.

Match #4: Motor City Machine Guns – Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin defeated Austin Theory & Grayson Waller by pinfall. The Guns won with their Skull N Bones double team neckbreaker/top rope splash combo move. Shelley pinned Theory for the win.

The WWE Tag Team Champions #DIY – Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano were backstage watching the match. Pretty Deadly walked up to #DIY saying they thought #DIY was going to help them. Ciampa said that they didn’t want to scratch their backs. Gargano mentioned Pretty Deadly helping them last week and Gargano claimed he’s got them. The #DIY guys left. Apollo Crews walked up to Pretty Deadly saying if you are dumb enough to believe #DIY then you deserve everything coming your way and it’s not the Tag Team Titles. Crews left while Pretty Deadly sarcastically thanked him for the advice.

Nia Jax was in the locker room when Candice LeRae let Jax know that Tiffany Stratton was going to the ring. Jax claimed she would go congratulate Stratton herself.

The WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton was interviewed in the ring by Byron Saxton. Stratton said that less than a year ago, she debuted on Smackdown, she became Miss Money in the Bank, and at 25 years old she’s already better than your favorites. Saxton mentioned Jax bullying her. Stratton said that she befriended Jax, she got Jax to trust her and Stratton let Jax think that Stratton was a dumb blonde, so Stratton let her think that. Stratton said that she took Jax’s WWE Women’s Championship. Stratton told the fans to put some respect on her name and tell her what time it is, but here comes Nia Jax. The former WWE Women’s Champion Nia Jax had an angry look on her face. Jax said she could kill her. Jax said that Stratton would be nothing without her because Jax claimed she made Stratton. Bayley made her entrance in her wrestling gear. Bayley told Jax to shut up. Bayley said if that was Stratton’s plan all along then you got Bayley because she thought Stratton was stupid. Bayley reminded Stratton that the reason that Jax had the championship was because Stratton helped her. Bayley said it’s only fitting that she takes the title from Stratton. Naomi and Bianca Belair, who are the Women’s Tag Team Champions, interrupted with Naomi saying that she had Jax beat last week. Naomi said if it weren’t for Stratton, she would be holding two titles right now, so Naomi believes she deserves a shot. Jax said that nobody cares about Naomi and Jax headbutted Belair and Naomi. Bayley fought with Jax, but Jax knocked her down. The four women were fighting so Stratton hit the Prettiest Moonsault Ever off the top rope onto the four women in the ring. Stratton left with her title.

The Smackdown GM Nick Aldis arrived by the entrance area. Aldis informed Jax, Bayley, Naomi, and Belair that they will have a fatal four-way number one contender’s match right now. The fans popped for that. All four women had their ring gear on, so it was obvious that was coming.

Match #5:Bayley defeated Naomi, Nia Jax and Bianca Belair. It was a long match that went nearly 20 minutes and featured a lot of nearfalls along with each woman breaking up pin attempts. Belair tackled Jax over the commentary table on the floor. Bayley hit the Roseplant on Naomi for the win.

Cody Rhodes was approached by Jimmy Uso backstage. Cody said as far as Roman Reigns is concerned, he knew that Reigns was coming for the title. Cody left. Carmelo Hayes approached Jimmy Uso and threatened Jimmy. Melo said that “Melo Don’t Miss” and Jimmy said with all those bricks, you can build a damn house. Jimmy did a “Yeet” hand gesture and left.

Bayley was interviewed backstage by Byron Saxton, who informed Bayley that her Women’s Title match against Tiffany Stratton will be next week. Bayley said that she’s grown up in this business, she’s known people like Stratton her whole career and she’s wrestled Stratton all year. Bayley mentioned that Stratton had never beaten her, so she left with confidence.

Match #6: Jacob Fatu & Tama Tonga defeated Cody Rhodes & Jimmy Uso by pinfall. The team of Jacob & Tama isolated Jimmy for most of the match, Cody got the hot tag and was dominating. After Cody hit a Cody Cutter on Fatu, Kevin Owens showed up, so Cody went brawling with his rival to the backstage area. Jimmy Uso was left all alone as the legal man. Jimmy hit an Uso Splash on Tama for a two count because Jacob made the save. Fatu sent Jimmy face first into the top of the commentary table repeatedly. Back in the ring, Fatu hit an Impaler DDT. Fatu hit a double jump moonsault off the top on Jimmy for the pinfall win.

Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes were fighting in the back part of the arena by the technical area. Cody and Owens were battling on top of some equipment cases. Cody charged at Cody and tackled Owens off the cases to send them both crashing two tables that were on the floor. Cody and Owens were down on the floor selling the attack. The WWE Officials checked on them. That was the end of the show.
