WWE Scrap Major Championship Plans For WrestleMania 39

Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns & Paul Heyman

The main event of WrestleMania 39 has been a source of fascination for fans for a number of months. While it was something of a given that Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns would be involved, everything else was very much up in the air.

The Rock was coming back to face Reigns, and then he wasn’t, Cody Rhodes earned himself a World Title shot at the Royal Rumble, Sami Zayn is the hottest babyface in the company, and Steve Austin was even offered the chance to face the Tribal Chief. However, at one point it appears that WWE came up with a very different solution to their embarrassment of riches.

It has been widely believed that WWE would like to return to having two World Championships, however, this would mean Roman Reigns losing one of his titles. Something the company is seemingly against. This led to plans for the creation of another World Title belt which would have been won by Cody Rhodes on night one of WrestleMania 39. This would have left Regns free to battle The Rock on night two.

WWE Scrap Plans For Another World Championship

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer broke down the plans.

“If it was Roman and The Rock, they were gonna create a championship on Saturday night that Cody probably would have ended up winning.

“It was Cody, Drew (McIntyre) or (Seth) Rollins that was gonna come out of that one. Because they wanna go back to two titles.”

It has been announced that Roman Reigns will be back in action at Elimination Chamber when he defends his Undisputed WWE Universal Title against Sami Zayn. It is presumed that he will then go on to face Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania. Rhodes and Reigns’ Special Counsel Paul Heyman met in an emotional segment on Raw which saw Heyman reduced to tears.
