This week on WWE Raw saw Seth Rollins defend the World Title against Jinder Mahal, Cody Rhodes opening the show and more.
Raw took place at the Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas with Michael Cole and Wade Barrett on commentary. There was a snowstorm in Arkansas so there were fewer fans than usual. It was the last Raw against NFL Monday competition until September.
There was an opening video package about Martin Luther King Jr. since it was MLK Day in the US on Monday. They do this every year.
Cody Rhodes did a promo to start the show getting ready to talk about the Royal Rumble when Drew McIntyre interrupted. Drew mentioned they are friends, they’re the same age, they came up in WWE together in their early 20s and even were Tag Team Champions called The Dashing Ones. Drew talked about how they both reinvented themselves after leaving WWE and facing Cody in his last match before Drew Drew said that he believed in Cody and thought that Cody would be the first WWE Champion in his family.
Drew also complained about things as usual saying Cody poisoned the locker room. Cody mocked Drew for saying “if” a lot with his complaints. Cody said he thinks about finishing the story, he looks at his heart and the fans. Cody said he’ll give Drew something to complain about in the Royal Rumble. Cody ended it by reminding Drew that he won their last match.
R-Truth was backstage with some “new” shirts for The Judgment Day with his name on the shirt. R-Truth mentioned Tom & Nick Mysterio again. Damian Priest complained until Truth gave him a stack of cash.
Match #1: #DIY – Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano defeated The Judgment Day’s Dominik Mysterio & JD McDonagh by pinfall. #DIY won with their Meet in the Middle double team move. In a follow-up post, Johnny Gargano detailed travel issues the tag team faced to get to the show.
Match #2: Indi Hartwell & Candice LeRae defeated Chelsea Green & Piper Niven by pinfall. LeRae won with a Lionsault on Green for the win. The finish was confusing because Indi covered first, then Candice covered and the referee kept on counting.
GUNTHER, the Intercontinental Champion, did an in-ring promo with Ludwig Kaiser. Gunther spoke about how in last year’s Rumble he went from #1 and was the runner up. Gunther said he would win this year. Gunther also loved Kaiser taking out Kofi Kingston last week. Xavier Woods interrupted and wanted revenge for his friend Kofi.
Match #3: Ludwig Kaiser defeated Xavier Woods by disqualification. Woods hit Kaiser with a chair and was DQ’d for it. They fought after the match, but Kaiser was able to get away.
Backstage after the match, Kaiser attacked Woods. Jey Uso made the save for Woods.
Match #4: Akira Tozawa defeated Ivar by pinfall. A match with a shocking finish as Tozawa hit a Sunset Flip Powerbomb off the turnbuckle for the win. After the match, Valhalla attacked Maxxine Dupri on the floor and Ivar beat up Tozawa. Ivar hit top rope Doomsault to end it looking strong.
An Instagram post from CM Punk was shown about how he would be Face to Face with Cody Rhodes on Raw next week.
Rhea Ripley, the Women’s World Champion, did a promo warning whoever wins the Royal Rumble saying they would waste their title shot opportunity by challenging her. Becky Lynch interrupted and joined Ripley in the ring. Lynch talked about how they had similar stories. Lynch said there was a voice in her head saying maybe Ripley is better. Lynch wanted to prove that Ripley wasn’t better and to do that Lynch has to win the Rumble, point to the sign and set up Mami vs. The Man at WrestleMania. Ripley: “There’s only one other person that wants you to win the Royal Rumble match more than yourself, and that’s me. I’ll see you at WrestleMania.”
Match #5: The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor & Damian Priest defeated R-Truth & The Miz by pinfall. There was comedy since Truth was involved. Priest was the illegal man that hit South of Heaven on Truth (the referee was looking at JD McDonagh on the floor) and Balor covered Truth to win.
Shinsuke Nakamura did a promo threatening Cody Rhodes again. Nakamura warned the 29 other men in the Royal Rumble match.
Match #6: Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark defeated Tegan Nox & Natalya by submission. Baszler won with the Kirifuda Clutch submission move on Natalya.
Match #7:Seth “Freakin” Rollins defeated Jinder Mahal by pinfall to retain the World Heavyweight Title. Mahal had the Indus Sher duo of Veer & Sanga with him. Damian Priest watched the match from ringside. When it looked like Priest might cash in, Drew McIntyre attacked him and they went fighting to the back. Veer & Sanga got involved leading to Veer hitting Rollins with a briefcase and Mahal hit The Khallas on Rollins for two. The referee ejected Veer & Sanga from ringside. Rollins avoided The Khallas again and Rollins hit a Curb Stomp to win. The show ended right after that.
Following the show, an update on Seth Rollins has been provided.
