WWE President Nick Khan has detailed the various backstage reactions to the Vince McMahon Netflix docuseries.
First announced back in 2020, the long-awaited series titled Mr. McMahon premiered on the streaming platform on September 2024. The show saw McMahon and some of the biggest names in wrestling history discuss McMahon’s journey in the pro wrestling world and the numerous scandals he faced along the way. McMahon was still a part of WWE as the Chairman of the Board while being interviewed for the series.
The 6th and final episode focused on the final years of Vince McMahon’s WWE career, including his 2022 resignation, return and January 2024 resignation when former employee filed a lawsuit accusing McMahon of sexual abuse and trafficking.
Although many prominent names from the pro wrestling world were featured, the project was not a WWE-produced series.
Khan recently appeared on The Bill Simmons podcast and was asked about the show. Simmons was one of the producers of the docuseries. When asked about the internal reaction, Khan noted that there were no issues with the first 5 episodes but there was a wide range of reactions to the final episode that focused on the allegations:
“Episodes one through five, it was all fine. Episode six obviously had a lot of tawdry allegations in there. The most important thing in the company was, ‘Hey, this is not for us to spike it.’ That’s not what the deal was and the deal that was struck with Netflix was prior to me joining WWE on a full-time basis. So it was sort of trying to help everyone who was watching it stay calm, and ‘we’ll get through this thing and get to the other side of it,’ which hopefully we are now.
“It went everywhere from ‘Hey, it was phenomenally done’ to ‘Oh my God, this thing is not true, it’s not factual.’ There were people who loved it as an objectively told profile of a person, and people who were close to the subject who didn’t like it, which I would understand, and I think you understand.”
