On May 27th 2023, Roman Reigns reached the stunning landmark of 1000 days as WWE Universal Champion.
‘The Tribal Chief’ was crowned after victory in a triple threat match over ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman at WWE Payback 2020.
Reigns’ domination of the WWE title picture has seen him defeat the likes of John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Drew McIntyre, Edge, Cody Rhodes, Brock Lesnar and Logan Paul amongst others.
To cap off his domination of the, Reigns added the WWE Championship to his name at WrestleMania 38 with victory over Lesnar in a unification bout and has been known as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion ever since.
With WWE keen to both highlight and market Reigns’ incredible achievement, reports suggests that they are now looking to extend another Champion’s reign into record breaking territory.
WWE Discussing Record Breaking Intercontinental Champions Reign
WWE Hall Of Famer The Honky Tonk Man has held the record for longest Intercontinental Championship reign since dropping the strap to The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam 1988.
Since that record breaking run, some of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling have held the Intercontinental Title.
The likes of Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, The Rock and Triple H have all held the gold, but none came close to the mark set by the self proclaimed ‘greatest Intercontinental Champion of all-time’.
That could be set to change, however, with current title holder Gunther now rapidly approaching the 455 day mark that would see him set a new benchmark.
A new report from WRKD Wrestling has suggested that internal discussions have already taken place:
“We’ve learned that there are internal talks for Gunther to pass Honky Tonk Man’s all time historic Intercontinental championship reign.
He’d officially break the record on September 6th.”
The Austrian-born Superstar has held the title since June 10th 2022, when he defeated Ricochet on an episode of WWE SmackDown to claim the crown.
