A new report has shed light on the recent WWE show at Madison Square Garden and the original plans the company had in place for Brock Lesnar on the show.
WWE had advertised a big opponent for Brock Lesnar at a recent live event held in Madison Square Garden with Paul Heyman teasing a serious threat to Lesnar’s WWE Championship.
In the end, Lesnar’s opponent was revealed as Raw star Austin Theory. This caused some outrage from fans who had been expecting either a bigger name or a big surprise debut as Lesnar’s challenger.
Now Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio has shed some light on the original plans for Lesnar’s opponent and says WWE ended up where they started:
“The match was – Bobby Lashley was never gonna be in the match, he was advertised but they knew he was out. It wasn’t anything imminent but yeah they knew it was Austin Theory, at first it was gonna be Austin Theory – they decided it was better not to advertise that.”
“So it changed several times, it started as Austin Theory, it ended as Austin Theory but there were other names thrown in there as time came in, so it was never a lock.”
Meltzer also shed some light on the reason for the change of advertising relation to Roman Reigns’ match on the same show where he faced Seth Rollins:
“[…] Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins was advertised and then all of a sudden the advertising for [that] was pulled and Reigns was gonna wrestle a mystery guy and it ended up being Seth Rollins and you go ‘why did they change the advertising?”
“The reason was that they had again when they were bouncing around ideas, they bounced around other ideas including other people other than Seth Rollins. When we were at the end they ended up going with the guy who they originally started with in Seth Rollins.”
Both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns retained their titles on the show with the night ending with Reigns attacking his WrestleMania 38 opponent and laying him out in a vicious fashion.
