WWE Officials Reportedly Subject To “Heat” Following Contract Confusion

A new report has said that WWE officials were subject to “significant heat” after some star’s contract status seemed to catch the company by surprise.

Adam Cole shocked the system once again when he debuted for All Elite Wrestling at the end of their All Out pay-per-view. The former NXT Champion appeared to want to confront The Elite before he embraced his old Bullet Club partners and letting The Young Bucks plant a kiss on his cheeks just like in times gone by.

Cole had been the subject of many rumours during the summer after it became apparent that his WWE contract had expired at some point in July. The former Undisputed Era member signed a short term extension that let him face Kyle O’Reilly in ‘The Undisputed Finale’ at NXT TakeOver: 36. It was reported at the time that Cole’s deal expiring had caught some within WWE by surprise as they believed his contract had longer to run. Pete Dunne was in a similar position as Cole with his WWE deal seemingly running out in July.

Fightful Select have sought to clarify some of the rumours surrounding current contract situations with Kevin Owens deal now subject of much discussion.

Their report states that WWE was aware that Owens’ deal runs out in January 2022 despite this being much earlier than was originally made public. WWE is said to have renegotiated several deals in 2019, giving their stars higher guarantees and that many wrestlers at that time altered their deals with the company.

The report also states that issues with contracts seemed to be in NXT and the transition between competitors joining the main roster from the black and gold brand. Malakai Black’s situation was mentioned when the Dutchman was subject to only a thirty-day non-compete clause upon his release from the company rather than the main roster ninety-day clause. Black has since debuted for AEW and seems to have rid the company of Cody Rhodes for the time being.

Reportedly there was “significant heat” in the company directed to those that it was felt were “falling asleep at the wheel” in regards to the detail and planning of NXT contracts. Fightful Select say they have been told that those had been handled accordingly. It was also added that contracts weren’t as big of a concern on the main roster with several talents dealing directly with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.
