On January 17th, 2023 it was announced that Jay Briscoe had tragically passed away aged just 38.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer later reported that Briscoe’s death was the result of a car accident in Laurel, DE. Meltzer also noted that two people sadly passed away in the tragic accident.
Jay Briscoe’s wife has since made an emotional plea on social media as her daughter prepares to undergo surgery.
NXT Scrap Segment Following Jay Briscoe’s Death
Briscoe’s death was also acknowledged on WWE NXT which was airing live at the time that the news began to circulate. Announcer Vic Joseph cut a solemn figure as he delivered the news to the audience watching at home. It has now been reported that NXT also scrapped a planned segment for the show after the news broke.
As reported by John Pollock, NXT Tag Team Champions the New Day had been scheduled to host a funeral segment as part of their on-going feud with Pretty Deadly. However, the decision was made to cancel the angle. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston still appeared in a promo segment dressed in suits hinting at the very late changes.

In 2022 Jay Briscoe enjoyed one of the best years of his wrestling career. His trio of matches alongside brother Mark with FTR will be remembered as one of greatest trilogies in wrestling history as the two teams traded the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Titles.
As news of Jay’s untimely death spread on social media tributes began to pour in from across the world. Friends, colleagues and fellow wrestlers lined up to pay tribute to a man described as a great wrestler, but an even better father.
