MSK defeat Legado Del Fantasma via pinfall – advance to the Dusty Classic Final

  • Initial technical exchange between Wesley and Wilde with both competitors adding a slight show boating tweak to their offence.
  • Commentary discuss the clash of styles between the two teams as well as focusing on the immense pressure on MSK following their debut in the dusty cup.
  • Legado hit a flawless leapfrog assisted dropkick onto Carter on the apron causing him to take a huge fall onto the barricades at ringside.
  • Picture perfect Poisonrana followed by a Spinning Suplex onto Wesley gives LDF a near-fall,
  • MSK hit their signature assisted Standing Moonsault off the apron onto the outside.
  • LDF hit a incredible hybrid 450 however Wesley gets his knees up counter the manoeuvre.
  • MSK hit the signature assisted blockbuster and pick up the victory over Legado Del Fantasma.

Analysis: I was Hoping for a beautiful conflict between Mexican Lucha Libre and The Light-Heavyweight style popularised in the US and that was this achieved. We started slow and calculated with technical exchanges and nods to the cultural influence behind each performer, as the match picked up pace we got to see more of the aerial ability of both teams. I really hope MSK get some promo package time on social media and on Sunday’s PPV to build up their characters slightly but in-ring perfect since debuting.

Xia Li defeats Cora Jade via pinfall, Mei Ying reigns supreme.

  • Xia Li does a martial arts display with swords before the match and there is a slashing effect over the screen.
  • Kayden and Kacy confront Xia and then Mei Ying during the match.
  • Xia destroy Cora Jane with minimal effort before Kayden and Kacy try to confront Mei Ying.
  • Mei Ying commands Xia to destroy them [non verbally] which Xia complies with following harm being threatened to Boa.
  • Segment ends with Xia and Boa looking at Mei Ying in fear with a symphony of destruction in front of them.

Analysis: These segments and the presentation are going to divide fans, its cinematic, presented like an action film with a hint of horror and mystery. This is perfect for my style of wrestling fan however those more favourable of a older style will complain that this is not wrestling but a movie being made. Honestly I don’t think regardless of your stand anyone can deny that this is a massive improvement in the Xia Li character!

Johnny Gargano Explains his Injury, Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart defeat Indi Hartwell & Candice LeRae- Advance to Dusty Classic Final.

  • Gargano [in a wheelchair] is carried into the ring by Theory and Hartwell, he shows footage of his injury and its Kushida’s Spot Kick to his arm.
  • The crowd chant ‘Johnny Wheelchair’ as he explains he cant walk due to a Broken arm and his anger at being in a. Wheelchair because as we know Johnny hates Wheels.
  • Regal confirms that Gargano has been cleared and that he is faking, furthermore Gargano’s X-Ray is fake to which Gargano responds the longest bone in his body starts…with D.
  • As Regal asks Kushida what he thinks, the former BOSJ winner appears in the right to grab the title at which point Gargano just stands up instantly.
  • The segment moves into the Women’s Dusty Cup Semi Final as Ember and Shotzi make their way to the ring in some incredible looking matching ring-gear.
  • Candice LeRae is worked over to open the exchanges however eventually Hartwell makes the tag and regains control for the heel duo.
  • Ember’s Law is in full effect tonight as the former NXT Champion works over Hartwell and LeRaw[ whom Barrett accidentally calls Candice Mitchell at one point] utilising a series of fast tags and unique offence to gain control.
  • Returning from the commercial break and it has been all The Way however Blackheart makes a big tag to get some revenge on CLR.
  • LeRae hits the Wicked StepSister followed up by Hartwells Elbow Drop onto Shotzi however Moon makes the save.
  • Blackheart his the top rope Senton onto Hartwell to pick up the win and set up a finals clash against Dakota and Raquel.
  • William Regal confirms post match that the winner of the Dusty Classic Finals at NXT TakeOver WILL receive a future Women’s Tag Title show.
  • Post Match Kross is shown backstage having attacked and laid out Legado Del Fantasma warning Escobar that this will be coming for him next week.

Analysis: The opening Gargano exchange was genuinely comedic genius and perfectly executed by all involved. The match that followed was very strong with the correct outcome and solid storytelling throughout. Finally the much needed stakes added to the tournament finals! Hopefully Raquel and Dakota win the finals and can get those belts on WWE NXT where they can be used to elevate the incredible and stacked Women’s Divison and in-turn free up time on RAW’s limited women’s division.

Kushida defeats Austin Theory [w/ Johnny Gargano] via DQ

  • Gargano immediately interferes and tries to provide the much needed distraction on the outside however Kushida is still able to gain control early on.
  • Theory is out to deal maximum damage to Kushida to weaken him for Gargano ahead of their TakeOver title match.
  • Kushida hits a beautiful springboard Elbow Strike to Theory causing Theory to roll to the outside, The Time Splitter managers to catch Theory on the apron and lock in the cross armbreaker.
  • Gargano Superkicks Kushida on the outside forcing the DQ finish however the duo beat down the challenger until Lumis makes the save from under the ring.
  • Theory spooked by Lumis’ presence hops in the ring only to get caught in a Hoverboard Lock followed by the signature submission of Lumis.

Analysis: I am very glad that we are still getting Kushida vs. Gargano as it has all the tools to be a TakeOver classic and in many ways a dream match. The Lumis involvement concerns me as I would quite like to see Kushida leave with the NA title however this would indicate Gargano facing Lumis for the belt which is less attractive to me.

Cameron Grimes returns to WWE NXT and is now a Trading Billionaire

  • Grimes arrives in a beautiful White Lambo and debuts a slightly modified new look including glasses, and a lovely brown suit jacket complete with a stack of cash.
  • Cameron Grimes states he first made his money by playing video games and loving GameStop so much he invested in it and then when he had loads of money he bought Dog [Doge] Coins.
  • The Former Caveman is no longer here to take instructions from anyone because he is the richest man in NXT.

Analysis: This segment was incredible, the repackage [slight] was fantastically unexpected and the on the nose references to Doge Coin and GameStop/Reddit was fantastic. Not every performer needs a main event gimmick and Grimes regularly proves as an entertainer he is unrivalled.

Grizzled Young Veterans defeat Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa via pinfall- Advance to Dusty Classic Final

  • Gibson pre-match insults both opponents for going soft before telling them to take their fake friendship and shove it because the Dusty Cup is for Tag Teams.
  • GYV demonstrate their tag team prowess taking down the illegal man [Ciampa] on the outside whilst Thatcher is down in-ring.
  • Thatcher shows his scouting knowledge of the GYV countering a high risk manoeuvre attempting to make the tag to Ciampa only for the former NXT Champion to still be down on the outside following the earlier attack.
  • Ciampa eventually makes the hot tag and is able to take control for a period of time before the Veterans regain the momentum.
  • Drake hits his jumping assisted sideways dropkick into Thatcher to knock him off the apron allowing Gibson to work over Ciampa alone in the ring.
  • The veterans use their superior tag team prowess to isolate Thatcher on the outside before hitting the Ticket to Mayhem and booking their ticket to the finals after pinning Ciampa.

MSK vs. Grizzled Young Veterans confirmed as the 2021 Dusty Classic Final taking place this Sunday at NXT TakeOver: Vengance Day
