WWE has refiled to maintain its trademark on the name “Edge,” despite the star now wrestling under his real name, Adam Copeland, in AEW.
A search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database confirms that WWE initially allowed the trademark to lapse. The USPTO marked the application as abandoned on 22 April 2025 after the company failed to respond in time to questions stemming from its original November 2024 filing.
A document dated 6 January 2025 gave WWE three months to respond. With no reply submitted, the trademark was deemed abandoned. However, WWE revived the filing on 1 May.
The USPTO acknowledged the updated application, stating:
“The trademark application has been accepted by the Office (has met the minimum filing requirements) and that this application has been assigned to an examiner.”
It further clarified that:
“If the application was abandoned for failure to file a timely statement of use or a request for extension of time to file a statement of use, the application will be forwarded to the intent to use unit.”
This latest filing makes clear the company’s intent to retain control over the “Edge” moniker, a name long associated with Copeland’s Hall of Fame career in WWE. Since joining AEW, Copeland has used both his real name and the nickname “Cope.”
When Does WWE Hall Of Famer Adam “Edge” Copeland Think He Will Retire From Wrestling?
Adam “Edge” Copeland spoke about how long is left on his current AEW contract and his plans following its expiry. Copeland confirmed that he has roughly two years left on his current contract, which means he will be 53 when it ends, and he said that he thinks he will likely retire from in-ring competition at that point. He also stated that he plans to do “a whole lot of yoga” in his retirement.
