WrestleMania 39 weekend is shaping up to be one of the most important periods of Rey Mysterio’s WWE career, if not his entire wrestling life.

On March 31st the star is due to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as recognition of his remarkable career. Mysterio began his wrestling aged just 14 and went on to enjoy incredible popularity across the world while competing for the likes of AAA, ECW, WCW, and WWE.

In a career that has spanned more than 30 years the star has won multiple World Championships and is widely credited with revolutionising cruiserweight wrestling in the United States.

After his Hall of Fame induction, Mysterio will take on his son Dominik at WrestleMania 39 in the most personal on-screen rivalry of his career.

Speaking in a new interview with WESH 2 News, Mysterio reflected on the progress Dominik has made, commenting that he was “truly blessed” to be able to watch his son make his own way in the ring.

“Incredible (Rey said about Dominik Mysterio’s growth over the last year). You can only imagine the pride that I feel watching him on TV. I’m on SmackDown, he’s on Raw. So to be able to just sit down at home with my wife and view his matches, hear his promos, just witness his growth over the past year-and-a-half or year since we were separated, every now and then, I’ll look at my wife and go, ‘Wow. Could you believe how much he’s grown and how good he’s getting?’

And you know, I hear the buzz, I see what’s going on so that makes me feel extremely proud of his work. It was very hard for him to walk in my footsteps or be in my shadow because of what I’ve created for the past 34 years. So it’s beautiful man. I am truly blessed to be able to see his growth and just enjoy watching him.”

Looking at what’s next in his own career, the 48-year-old star admitted that he will likely retire before he hits 50, despite being close to the top of his game.

“I’ve always had this number in mind and it just kept getting higher and higher every single time just because how great my body has been feeling and overall, how since my schedule slimmed down, I feel like this energetic person that loves to go in there and perform on a once-a-week basis. Just brings out a different type of energy. But, I had 5-0, 50 was the number that I said I was — I cannot and I don’t think I will go past it.

But to be able to be inducted and given such a prestige honor of being part of the Hall of Fame, it’s like the ultimate in your career. You always think that, hoping that one day when you retire, that offer is presented to you but here it is, you know? I’m in somewhat of the peak of my career maybe because I still feel great, I feel like I can compete on the level of other superstars but overall, it’s just a dream come true.”
