WWE Internally Discussed Bringing In AEW Star

Kenny Omega vs. Christian Cage at All Out 2021.

Although no official approach was made, there were reportedly talks within WWE about making a sensational bid for a current AEW star.

In recent months WWE legend Edge has hinted that he is looking to retire in the not-too-distant future. The star has hinted that he would like his final match to be in Toronto as that is where his career began.

Interestingly, there was also talk of a reunion with former tag team partner Christian, now known as Christian Cage in AEW. The pair teamed together for a legendary run in the late 90s and early 2000s winning the World Tag Team Titles seven times. They also featured in a number of famous matches including the first two TLC matches.

While the pair haven’t teamed together since early 2011, they did enjoy a quick reunion in the 2021 Royal Rumble match as Christian returned to the company before heading to AEW.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE discussed trying to bring Christian back to team with Edge, although there is no word on whether a deal would actually be possible.

“Behind-the-scenes there was talk of Edge and Christian wanting to team together for one last time or run but we don’t know Christian’s contract length and if it would be possible.

Edge signed a three-year-deal for $3 million per year in early 2020 and likely the time was extended due to injuries but would be up later this year.”

Edge Was Offered AEW Switch Before Returning To WWE

After first joining WWE more than 25 years ago, Edge became synonymous with the sports entertainment giant. He won multiple World Championships and was inducted into the Hall of Fame following his first retirement.

However, it is no secret that there was interest from elsewhere in the star before he returned to action at the 2020 Royal Rumble. The same report from Meltzer reiterated this story, noting that Tony Khan approached Edge while he was retired.

Speaking ahead of WrestleMania 39, the man himself also alluded to this approach, noting that“there was an opportunity to go elsewhere.”
