WWE scheduling SummerSlam on the same weekend as Starrcast V was a blessing in disguise for Ric Flair and Conrad Thompson.
Ric Flair is set to wrestle what is being billed as his final match this weekend in Nashville. The Hall of Famer will team with his son-in-law, Andrade El Idolo, to take on Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. Flair has stated many times that he’s motivated to put on the best possible match and that it’s not about money for him.
The final farewell match for ‘The Nature Boy’ will occur on the same weekend and city as WWE’s SummerSlam. With SummerSlam happening first on Saturday, July 30th, some speculated whether the event would overshadow the big Starrcast V event featuring Flair the following day.
During a conference call regarding the match, the promoter for Starrcast V, Conrad Thompson, spoke about the two events being on the same weekend. According to Thompson, SummerSlam being on a Saturday was a blessing in disguise.
“Ric Flair’s Last Match is happening in conjunction with Starrcast because I saw an opportunity on that Sunday. Had SummerSlam been on a Sunday, I can’t say that there would have been a ‘Ric Flair’s Last Match.’ As an entrepreneur, I just look for opportunities, or as a friend of mine says ‘just look for open doors and walk through them.'”
There will be some crossover between the two events. Not only has SVP of WWE Live Events Jeff Jarrett been confirmed to have a huge involvement in Flair’s final match, but Charlotte Flair is said to be attending Starrcast V to watch her father wrestle. Flair has also hinted at other WWE stars such as Rey Mysterio, Apollo Crews, and Pat McAfee making an appearance at Starrcast V.
The sixteen-time World Champion has a lot of pressure heading into this weekend. He recently disclosed an injury, yet he still plans on making up for lost time after walking away from WWE in 2008.
