In a recent episode of Mark Calaway’s (The Undertaker) “Six Feet Under” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) offered fans an detailed look into his storied wrestling career. During the candid conversation, DDP highlighted what he considers the pinnacle of his in-ring work – feuding with the legendary “Macho Man” Randy Savage in WCW back in 1997.
Page, now mostly known for his “DDP Yoga” empire, discussed the impact of his rivalry with Savage and his approach to planning out matches in advance.
My best stuff ever was with Randy because everyone knew that Randy laid out everything.
The Hall of Famer’s own wrestling philosophy also closely aligned with Savage’s style.
And so did I – I wanted to know. But I was always more improv and preparation, I wanna know where we are going.
This approach to match structuring was somewhat unconventional at the time, setting both Page and Savage apart from their peers, compared to most wrestlers today.
Today everyone does it, but then it was just him and no one busted his balls, but everybody busted my balls about it. I had great matches all through that time, I didn’t care.
The DDP-Randy Savage feud is remembered as one of the most compelling storylines in late 90s WCW. The two would headline PPV events, and their matches are looked back on fondly today. Their encounters were characterised by intense action and great storytelling, with the rivalry not only elevating Page’s status in WCW but also showcasing his ability to work with one of the industry’s most respected veterans, in Randy Savage.
Randy Savage Would Be Chose For Which Hall Of Famer’s Mount Rushmore?
WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash has shared fond memories of his time working with “Macho Man” Randy Savage during their stint in WCW in 1999, expressing his admiration for Savage both as a performer and as a person, including saying he would easily make it on his Mount Rushmore list.
