Rey Mysterio has spent decades in the world of professional wrestling, and as such, he’s no stranger to having to adapt to a variety of circumstances.
One of Mysterio’s most storied opponents is WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, the man Mysterio faced in his pay-per-view debut at SummerSlam 2002. While the two would have many classic bouts in their career, one particular match on SmackDown was a bit underwhelming as the two only had seven minutes to tell their story. Angle detailed the bout on a recent episode of The Kurt Angle Show.
“It’s heart-wrenching. It’s nerve-wrecking because going 25-minutes you can take your time. You can tell a good story. You start with chain wrestling. The babyface overcomes the heel by out wrestling him then the heel does something cheap to stop the babyface get the heat. Then they have the comeback and then the false finishes and the finish.
“But, at this particular time we only went seven minutes (a match with Rey Mysterio on Smackdown). So, we literally I had to have Rey shine real quick and then go straight to the heat and we have to do the comeback and finish. So, it wasn’t as good of a story that was told with a 25-minute match, but I think for a seven minute match it was pretty damn good.”
During the match in question, Mysterio took a German suplex from Angle that shook up the legendary luchador. Despite concern, however, Mysterio was fine after taking the move.
“I never hurt anybody doing the German [suplex], but I got Rey pretty shaken up at that particular time. I was a little concerned about him for a little bit, but he came to and everything was okay.” (h/t eWrestlingNews)
Rey Mysterio Once Broke The Undertaker’s Nose With His “Bony Ass”
The scary German suplex at the hands of Kurt Angle is far from the only time a match has gone awry in Rey Mysterio’s long and storied career. Speaking in a recent interview with Hawk vs. Wolf, The Undertaker recalled another SmackDown match that saw The Deadman’s nose broken when Mysterio landed on his face instead of his chest.
“Rey Mysterio, tiny guy, sweetheart of a guy, he ended up jumping off the top rope, and his ass was supposed to hit me in the chest, but it hit me right in the face. It was a bony ass. Bony ass, right on the bridge of my nose. He lands, I have all of his weight on my head, I hit the mat and blew out the other one. I broke my nose and I was concussed. It’s hard being injured by an anus.
“My nose was broke, I fixed my nose right there, I just squeezed my nose back. The second one, to this day and it’s probably been 15 years, I still have double vision.” (h/t Fightful)
