After a mixed 2022, Kenny Omega started 2023 at the top of his game.
Omega began his year by returning to New Japan Pro-Wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom 17. On the show, Omega defeated long-time rival Will Ospreay in a match that fans have already touted as an instant classic. In the process, Omega won the IWGP United States Championship.
The AEW EVP then followed that up with victory alongside the Young Bucks on the January 11th episode of Dynamite over Death Triangle. The Escalera De La Muerte capped off the ‘Best of Seven’ series between the two teams as the Elite claimed the AEW World Trios Titles for a second time.
Jake Roberts Tips Hat To Kenny Omega
Speaking on a recent episode of his Snake Pit podcast, Jake Roberts discussed who he considered the best wrestlers in history. When it was put to the WWE Hall of Famer that Ric Flair or Shawn Michaels might be two of the greatest, Roberts immediately dismissed them. Instead, the veteran said that he would place Omega above both in the pecking order.
“Oh, God no,” Roberts said about whether he considers Flair the greatest of all time before adding that Omega is “one of the best in-ring performers ever.”
“He’s unbelievable, man, and I love his finishing maneuver [One-Winged Angel], and knee to the face, that’s pretty crisp,”
Kenny Omega is coming off the back of a mixed period in his career where he was out of action for the best part of ten months. The ‘Best Bout Machine’ returned to action in August 2022 after overcoming a number of injury problems.
Once back in the ring, Omega was greeted as a returning hero although he was quickly mired in controversy. Omega was involved in the post-All Out brawl with CM Punk, Ace Steel, and the Young Bucks. For his role in the chaos Omega was suspended, and only returned to AEW at Full Gear.
