During an interview while on tour in the UK for Inside the Ropes in December 2019, WWE Hall of Famer and Hardcore Legend Mick Foley talked about his final promo when he was Raw General Manager in 2017, knowing upon taking the role that he would eventually be fired in storyline by the on-screen Commissioner of Raw – Stephanie McMahon.
All I wanted was for a proper firing, the firing itself was good, and the week before was one of the best things I think I’ve done in the last 10 years. In my third week in that role, Triple H returned to WWE TV and interfered in a match with Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens, and Owens won the (Undisputed WWE) title. We were at a crossroads, the way it was written, there’s no grey areas – she (Stephanie) is bad, I’m good, and I said there’s no room for growth here, there’s nothing interesting here.
Mick Foley tried to get WWE Chairman at the time Vince McMahon to alter some of his storyline plans that would lead up to Foley’s firing, but Vince didn’t agree.
I tried telling Vince that the real heat comes when you believe in her a little bit, but there’s more heat if it turns out Stephanie has been playing me the whole time. ‘I’m sorry Mick, I just don’t see it that way’.
But Stephanie had other ideas and got the crew together to cut a promo with Mick on their own without Vince’s approval.
When I got outta the room, Stephanie was there and she said let’s do it our way. And so we cut our promo without any rehearsals or verbiage, kinda a renegade backstage promo. I decided to call on the real-life fact that the first time I met Stephanie was 10 minutes after the Hell in a Cell match (with Undertaker). So there was realism in that promo, and it was intense and it was good, and just as we’re finishing we see Vince McMahon come out of his office and say ‘What The hell is going on here?’
Stephanie then would convince her father to watch the promo to see what he thought of it, to see if Vince would change his mind.
‘Dad, me and Mick just tried a promo a certain way, and we want you to take a look at it’. He watched it and about 30 seconds had passed after the promo had finished and he didn’t say a word and finally he goes ‘We’ll do it your way’. We rejoiced, we really felt like we fought for something and even if the role wasn’t perfect it got us to a point where it meant something meant something for the Triple H vs. Seth Rollins match and I got what I wanted which was a really good firing.
Mick Foley was eventually fired from the Raw GM role on March 20, 2017 by Stephanie McMahon, after Foley had been the GM since the previous July, and ended up being replaced by Kurt Angle in the role.
