An ex-WWE wrestler had an extreme justification for lying to Vince McMahon about his dad having a cardiac arrest.
Justin Credible was taken aback when he heard that he had to undergo a drug screening within a day of WWE implementing its Wellness Policy, which had been put in place following the tragic death of Eddie Guerrero.
Fearing that the test’s results would threaten his WWE career (during Credible’s mid-2000s work on the newly-established ECW brand), Credible concocted an excuse for his absence, constructing a false narrative that his father had a heart attack and “may have been dead”.
To ensure his story was believed, Credible went to great lengths to make it seem legitimate, which included calling agent Tony Garea in the early hours of the morning to inform him of the news:
“I call [WWE agent] Tony Garea at the hotel that morning, like two, three [o’clock] in the morning. We get it fixed to where I can fly out first thing in the morning to go home to be with my father who’s ‘had a heart attack and might be dead,’ which he’s like literally fine in bed.”
Vince McMahon Was Sympathetic To Credible’s Fake Situation
On the Cheap Heat Productions Podcast, Credible recounted that a lie he told to Vince McMahon sparked an intense and heartfelt conversation.
“‘Hello, pal, I hear what happened to your father. I lost my father,’” Credible continued, quoting McMahon. “And [he] goes on to talk about [that]. ‘Yes sir, yes sir, I’m sorry, sir.’ I’m just sitting there like, ‘Oh my f***ing God, what did I just do?’ It worked. I didn’t get in trouble. I didn’t have to go to towns. I missed Monday Night RAW that week, but wow.”
Credible says the experience was a wake-up call for him in regard to his drug use. Feeling guilty, the conversation caused Credible to quit drugs for good:
“Don’t do drugs, kids. Never did it again after that.”
