WWE Executive Bruce Prichard recently reminisced about the most memorable crowd reactions he experienced during his time with WWE on his podcast, Something To Wrestle. Prichard specifically highlighted two WrestleManias as the loudest moments in WWE history.
Firstly, Prichard recounted WrestleMania X-Seven in 2001, held at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, as an unforgettable experience.
I go back to WrestleMania 17, I thought that the Houston crowd was absolutely incredible all night long. The pop when Linda McMahon stood up out of the wheelchair (during the Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon match) it was just deafening. They were into everything we did.
Additionally, Prichard emphasised the crowd’s response to the Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock match at the following year’s WrestleMania in Toronto, Canada, highlighting the fervent support for Hogan from the live audience.
Listening to the crowd in Toronto with Hogan and Rock, the crowd wanted Hulk Hogan, they wanted their guy, they wanted the red and yellow, they didn’t want this Hollywood BS.
Using these moments as examples, Prichard drew a distinction between WWE fans and WCW fans, underscoring the contrasting preferences of the two audiences. He noted the power of the WWE audience’s unwavering support for Hulk Hogan, particularly upon his return to the company after a prolonged stint in WCW.
And that’s the power, when you talk about the nWo and how great it was and everything it did, at the end of the day the bigger audience (WWE), they wanted Hulk Hogan, the red and yellow, they didn’t want Hollywood Hogan. So when I preach about different audiences, WWE audiences and WCW audiences are different audiences. WCW audiences hated Hulk Hogan in the red and yellow because he represented everything from WWE. But WWE fans, they wanted their Hulk Hogan.
Prichard’s reflections serve as a testament to the enduring impact and influence of WWE’s passionate and distinct fan base, showcasing the vibrant and diverse history of WWE’s greatest crowds.
