A high profile WWE star is yet to have a match announced for WrestleMania 39.
With Cody Rhodes challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, John Cena challenging Austin Theory for the US Title and Brock Lesnar set for a giant showdown with Omos, the biggest names to casual wrestling fans have their Mania matches locked in.
WWE Champions Set To Work Both Nights Of WrestleMania
One name notably absent from the confirmed card is Ronda Rousey, with the direction of the former Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion still relatively unknown.
Early reports indicated that Rousey would be teaming with fellow former MMA star Shayna Baszler to challenge for the Women’s Tag Team Championships. However, with current champions Becky Lynch and Lita set to team with Trish Stratus to take on Damage CTRL, a title defence seemed unlikely.
An update on Rousey’s Mania plans have been updated by Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The report states that a defence of the Women’s Tag Team Championships will still be taking place at WWE’s biggest show of the year, with the champions pulling double duty. The 6 woman tag team match will be taking place on night one, followed by whoever holds the gold to defend the titles against Rousey and Baszler on night 2.
Plans for Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler have not been confirmed due to a suspected injury to Rousey. If the winner of the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble is not cleared to compete then a championship match will not be taking place. However, it is believed by those backstage that Rousey will be able to recover in time for the event.
If Rousey is cleared to compete, this will be the 4th WrestleMania match for the former UFC Women’s Champion. Rousey would make her in-ring debut for the company at WrestleMania 34, teaming with Kurt Angle to defeat Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.
