WWE has announced that for the entire month of June they will be celebrating the unparalleled career of John Cena, marking his 20th anniversary in the company.
2022 has already seen the 20th anniversary of WWE icons such as Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, and Batista celebrated by the company and fans. Now, the fourth pillar of the most famous developmental class of all time is getting a whole month dedicated to him as WWE announced June would be #CenaMonth.
John Cena made his on-screen WWE debut on the June 27th, 2002 edition of SmackDown where he famously answered Kurt Angle’s open challenge. Cena was asked by Angle what made him think he could step up to the Olympic gold medallist with Cena almost frothing at the mouth as he replied “ruthless aggression.”
That was the beginning of an incredible ascent for John Cena as he morphed into the Dr. of Thuganomics before capturing the biggest prize in WWE less than three years after he debuted when he defeated JBL for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21.
Little did anyone know that his famous win as WrestleMania went Hollywood would be the first of a record-equalling 16 world championship victories for the West Newbury, Mass. native.
WWE issued a statement on their website, encouraging fans to share their favourite moments from Cena’s career and promising a premiere episode of WWE Playback featuring Cena:
“In honor of the upcoming 20-year anniversary of that seminal night, WWE is paying tribute to The Cenation Leader throughout June with the launch of #CenaMonth.
“Starting today, keep your eyes locked on WWE social platforms to celebrate all things John Cena. The festivities include a brand-new episode of WWE Playback featuring The Cenation Leader breaking down his own debut, Cena-themed editions of WWE Top 10 and WWE Playlist, a bevy of rare and unseen photos, tons of classic throwback videos, and much more!
“Join the celebration by sharing your favorite Cena moments and memories all month long using the hashtag #CenaMonth.”
