As per HeelByNature, WWE officially filed to cancel it’s trademark and ownership over the label, Cody Rhodes, on November 2.
The name which the current AEW TNT Champion competed under during his time with WWE has been property of World Wrestling Entertainment up until now and though Cody mentioned that he could have used the name without issue, he didn’t.
On April 13 this year, the AEW Superstar sought to trademark his name when it came to light that the trademark had lapsed with WWE. However, he was unable to attain the rights as the promotion filed a late renewal citing late payment and filing due to the current COIVD situation.
WWE did manage to file the renewal on May 15 and Cody’s attempt was refused. It is worth noting that the humble talent said that he held no grudge or ill-will over the minor dispute.
Now, however, Cody will be able to attain the rights to his name once WWE’s filing is made official. The United States Patent and Trademark Office have given the talent until January 2021 next year to file an update.
It is a very possibility that Cody Rhodes will be strutting out on AEW Dynamite in the not too distant future.
Cody will defend his AEW TNT Championship against Darby Allin at AEW Full Gear on November 7.
