A new report claims that Gunther, now the Intercontinental Champion, has impressed “people of influence” within WWE with his willingness to do as they ask.
There have been a lot of changes within WWE over the past few months relating to ring names and character trajectories, but not everyone has been so keen to go along with this new vision. Gunther, however, has been open to the change.
A new report from Fightful Select states that the former WALTER has continuously impressed “people of influence” within the company, with Vince McMahon named specifically as having enjoyed his work on the main roster. It’s reported that Gunther’s move to the United States and dedication to training have placed him in a favourable position.
This should come as no surprise. The Austrian behemoth had already impressed within WWE several throughout his impeccable reign as NXT United Kingdom Champion, where he reigned for a mammoth 870 days between equally superb reigns from Pete Dunne and Ilja Dragunov.
Infamously, WALTER was renamed to Gunther at the start of 2022, initially causing severe controversy when his originally-planned new ring name was also that of a Nazi commander. ‘The Ring General’ personally doesn’t see an issue with the change as detailed in an interview with Wrestling Inc.:
“Not all to be honest. If it would be the other way around, and it would be Gunther before and WALTER now, it would have been the same uproar. A lot of people react negatively to change. Change is normal in life, and it’s part of it, and we have to go with it.”
Gunther, alongside Ludwig Kaiser (the former Marcel Barthel), made the official jump to the main roster on the post-WrestleMania edition of SmackDown. He’s primarily defeated enhancement talents since, though last night’s broadcast of the blue brand saw him usurp Ricochet to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
