WWE have officially announced that they will stage Superstar Spectacle on January 22, the event that is believed to lead into NXT India.
The announcement was made via WWE India’s social media page on January 9 only days after the company stated their intent to launch NXT India in the not too distant future.
Currently, the plan is for the promotion to film a one night tournament – like the initial WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament in 2017 – to crown a new WWE Indian Champion and to be shown on January 26, before transitioning what they currently refer to as WWE India, into NXT India.
Thanks to the current travel restrictions placed by COVID-19, WWE India will begin taping their shows at the WWE Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, Florida, with a view to recording regular shows in India by 2022. A full time schedule – ala NXT UK – will also come with its own Performance Centre in the country.
The idea of a potential NXT India was mooted during WWE’s Q3 Investor Call at the end of 2020. During that event, WWE President, Nick Khan, told of how the company were working within the country to get something up and running while confirming that the television deal with Sony India will be ongoing:
“We are excited to now be working with our content partner in India, Sony, on a 2021 event that will primarily feature our developing Indian Superstars. That event will air in India on the Sony platforms and will also be distributed domestically in the United States.”
While WWE have yet to confirm any participants for their recording of the Superstar Spectacle on January 22, it is widely believes that The Bollywood Boys, Kavita Devi and former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal will be a main part of the men’s, women’s and tag team divisions going forward.
