While much of the focus around WrestleMania 39 has been on the main event, WWE has announced that a huge title match will be opening the show.
On the March 24th episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Michael Cole announced that John Cena’s match with United States Champion Austin Theory will kick off WrestleMania 39.
Cena returned to WWE on March 6th only to be confronted by Austin Theory. The young star said that he’d got a gift for Cena, and that gift was a match at WrestleMania. Surprisingly, Cena turned the match down. However, after demolishing the United States Champion on the microphone and at the urging of the crowd Cena agreed to the match.
Despite claims to the contrary, Cena has since stated that he doesn’t pick who he worked with and is only facing Theory because that’s who he was booked against.
