William Regal has offered to settle his rivalry with Goldberg, which has now lasted for over twenty years.
Both Regal and WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg have enjoyed thriving careers late into their fifties. Regal was a prominent on-screen figure in NXT before his AEW debut earlier this year – a debut that led to the formation of the Blackpool Combat Club. Goldberg is still under contract with WWE and is one of their highest paid performers whilst only required to wrestle two matches a year.
On the 9th February 1998 episode of WCW Nitro, there was an infamous incident between the two stars. Going into the match, Goldberg was in the middle of his undefeated streak and was frequently jackhammering and pinning opponents mere seconds into the match.
Against Regal, Goldberg was taken over five minutes by the British technical wrestling mastermind and the stiffness and competitiveness of the match has been a subject of much debate.
In a recent episode of his Gentleman Villain podcast, the leader of The Blackpool Combat Club suggested that the two men could end the decades-old heat.
“It’s bothered me and it might not be Bill’s fault, but there’s this thing that needs putting to bed with me and Bill Goldberg. I’ve told my same story whenever I’ve been asked, it never changes. I have sent messages through people that are close mutual friends of ours, here’s my number. I’m not going to assume that I can call him because that’s just rude, but here’s my number, let’s talk so we can put this to bed or not.”
Regal later went on to comment on how previous interactions between the two men have gone.
“I’m not bothered one way or the other, but at least we can communicate, because whenever I’ve seen him after whatever he thinks has gone on, he’s never said a word to me. I haven’t seen him for many, many years, but I did see him in the 2000s and he never said a word to me. I didn’t know till after he left [WWE] that there was a problem with us; otherwise I would’ve confronted him about it.”
Regal’s stablemates Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley are set to compete for the AEW World Championship at Grand Slam Dynamite.
