Will Ospreay Suffers Betrayal At AEW WrestleDream; New International Champion Crowned

AEW statement of Will Ospreay injury

Will Ospreay has suffered a tragic betrayal at AEW WrestleDream 2024.

The fourth match of the PPV saw Will Ospreay defend his International Championship against Ricochet and Konosuke Takeshita in a three-way match. The trio produced an intense bout filled with high-risk action.

However, toward the conclusive stages of the match, fans saw Ricochet get knocked out of the ring as Don Callis tried to hit Ospreay with a screwdriver. An alert Ospreay caught the ambush and was about to attack Callis when Ospreay’s best friend interfered.

Fans saw a masked Kyle Fletcher save Don Callis from the attack, and instead stab Will Ospreay in the back of his head with the screwdriver. As Ospreay processed the backstab, Konosuke Takeshita capitalized on the situation and hit Ospreay with a running knee to become the new International Champion.

The segment closed with Ospreay’s former best friend, Kyle Fletcher, hitting his friend with the dreaded Tiger Driver 91. The two have shared a close bond since their time in the United Empire in NJPW. However, the friendship might have come to an end now.

Kyle Fletcher Had Discussed His Bond With Will Ospreay Just Before AEW WrestleDream

During an interview with Renee Paquette for Up Close, Kyle Fletcher shared his bond with Ospreay. He opened up on their chemistry, and how close he is with the former Champion.

It’s really, really cool in a lot of different ways. I think more so than just a wrestling sense, we have so much history just as — not even friends, but like we just have so much history together. I think from the moment that I met him, there was that instant chemistry.

We created like this bond that I’ve never had in my life before. Like this group of us just like — I’ve never had a group of friends where we, where I feel so comfortable being myself, and that was so cool to finally find.”

However, after Fletcher’s recent act, the above words stand meaningless.

In an interview prior to the event, Will Ospreay spoke about the long-term effects of his fast-paced style.
