Why John Cena Will Not Appear At SummerSlam

By Lyle Kilbane. Published 12th July 2022.

A new report has shed light on why sixteen-time world champion John Cena will not be a part of SummerSlam despite recently returning to WWE television.

Cena returned to WWE television for the first time in almost a year as he celebrated his 20th anniversary as a WWE Superstar on the 27th of June edition of Raw. John Cena was seen chatting with various WWE Superstars throughout the night, including one man who has had his fair share to say about Cena in recent weeks, former WWE United States Champion Theory.

Many fans expect that with WWE having a stadium to fill for The Biggest Party Of The Summer, the company could be calling in all its big guns to help sell out the show. However, it turns out John Cena will not be one of them.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that Cena’s film commitments will stop him being a part of WWE’s summer spectacular:

“I can confirm that being filmed right now is Peacemaker 2 and John Cena is involved. He’s working on Peacemaker 2 as we speak. I presume that’s why there have been discussions of him doing SummerSlam but then he showed up on Raw to announce ‘someday I’ll be back, I don’t know when, don’t know where but I’ll be back someday.’ Apparently, he’s filming Peacemaker and that’s why he can’t do SummerSlam.”

Despite not being a part of SummerSlam, there are some commentators who think John Cena could be in line for a match at WrestleMania 39 in the spring of 2023.
