Jim Ross has given his thoughts on a common fan request regarding the John Cena heel turn.
WWE Elimination Chamber was the night where the unthinkable happened as Cena attacked Cody Rhodes and sided with The Rock, turning heel for the first time in 20 years in the process.
No stranger to calling shock heel turns in pro wrestling, Ross’ reactions to Triple H’s many heelish actions and the shock Steve Austin turn at WrestleMania 17 are still fondly remembered all these years later. With Ross now in AEW, the Hall of Famer has not been on the call for some of the biggest moments of the current era such as Cody Rhodes finishing the story and the many twists and turns of The Bloodline Saga.
Following the Cena turn, videos emerged on social media of fans imagining what the moment would have been like if JR was one of the announcers. Speaking about the videos on his Grilling JR podcast, Ross stated that while he was flattered by the videos, he does not want anything to be taken away from WWE lead announcer Michael Cole:
“Yeah, it’s nice. I saw the same thing. It’s nice. I feel bad because it takes away from Michael Cole, and that’s not the objective, but everybody’s got their taste. My delivery and my presentation in moments like that are different, and I don’t think that you can replicate them. That’s just me.”
Jim Ross Comments On John Cena Heel Turn
With Cena’s actions easily being the most shocking moment in pro wrestling history in the past 20 years, many from the wrestling world and beyond have given their views on the segment that very few saw coming. When asked about the heel turn, Ross was very complimentary:
“I liked the hell out of it. I thought it was timely. I thought it made sense. I thought it added to the show. It was a jaw-dropper, to say the least. So, I had no issues with it at all. I thought it was fabulous.”
