What was Cody Rhodes’ Plan After Leaving AEW In 2022?

AEW President Tony Khan with The Elite The Young Bucks Matt Jackson Nick Jackson Dana Cody Rhodes Brandi Rhodes

Ex-AEW EVP Cody Rhodes has shared details about what his plans were after leaving the promotion in AEW.

In 2019, Rhodes helped Tony Khan alongside The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega start a rival wrestling company to WWE. Their brainchild AEW soon rose to great heights and posed a legitimate threat to WWE.

However, after a few differences, The American Nightmare parted ways with The Jacksonville-based promotion and made his surprising return against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 39. Now, after almost two years, Rhodes has a shocking revelation about his post-AEW exit plans.

In an interview on ‘The Flagrant’ podcast, he commented about having no plans after parting ways with Khan’s promotion and following his instincts.

It looked like I had a plan to everybody else, it was a total bluff. I didn’t know what the plan was. I certainly could have gone back (to AEW), we could have figured that out and been fine. Something inside was pointing a different direction for me.”

Since his return at ‘Mania 38, Rhodes has ascended to the top of the Stamford-based promotion and was the one to end Roman Reigns’ historic title run at WrestleMania 40.

Cody Rhodes Denies Rumored Reason For Parting Ways With AEW

In the same interview on ‘The Flagrant‘, Cody Rhodes shared more details about leaving with AEW and denied the popular rumored reason behind it. The current champion shared:

There are so many factors that went into it. When I start talking about this, people try to cite, ‘Oh, it was this. It was this.’ Here’s what I can tell you it wasn’t. It wasn’t anything to do with Tony (Khan) and Brandi. That’s a big one you hear all the time that ‘Tony didn’t sign Brandi.’ No, Brandi had been re-signed. Rhodes To The Top, we had a nice show on TBS, that had been renewed for a second season. Go Big Show.

“It was just a situation that felt icky. This is how I look at it in the end, I had really great memories with all of them, all the way back to All In. I had a really beautiful experience for a while, and I wanted to keep the memories good. I wanted to be able, in ten years, if I see those guys, I wanted to keep them good. I also wanted them to know, this is the Louisiana Purchase of wrestling, I will make sure, but I had great memories with them, and I wanted them to know.”
