Paul Heyman Reveals His Philosophy On Multiple Mid Card Championships

WWE Star Feels Pressured To Live Up To Paul Heyman's Expectations

Paul Heyman has shared his thoughts on this wrestling phenomenon.

Over the years, ‘Wiseman’ Paul Heyman has played an integral role in WWE, varying over multiple positions. From his creative duties to on-screen positions, Heyman is arguably one of the most important personalities in the promotion.

Fans often remember Heyman for his role as the lead writer for SmackDown from July 2002 to August 2003, and put together the famous ‘SmackDown Six’. He was also well-known for his focus on storytelling and quality wrestling.

During a recent interview with Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, Heyman was asked about his decision to halt the launch of a mid-card title on his brand. Answering the question, the Hall of Famer discussed his mentality of focusing on quality instead of quantity and believed that the introduction of multiple championships only watered down their importance.

Yeah. I’m not a big fan of a multitude of titles unless you can give them enough time. We had proper focus at that time on the championships that we had and didn’t feel that we needed more championships to tell better stories, and felt that the introduction of more championships only watered down the championships that we already had the spotlight on at the moment.

What works, works, and what doesn’t, doesn’t. If you can make it relevant, all pun intended to the island of relevancy, then it will work. If you can’t make it relevant, then it won’t. If there were 14 titles and they all mean something, then you should look at doing number 15. If you have seven titles and you’re struggling to put relevancy on all seven, then you need to cut down the number that you have. What’s working? If it’s working, let’s do more of that. If it’s not working, change it.”

WWE is well-known for introducing a plethora of titles, more infamously the 24/7 championship, which later ceases to get the spotlight, or turn into comic relief. However, the promotion recently launched two new women’s championships, looking to elevate the female division.

Paul Heyman Opens Up On Brock Lesnar’s WWE Return

In the same interview with CBS Sports, Paul Heyman opened up on the possibility of Brock Lesnar’s WWE return. Heyman recently reunited with CM Punk on the 22nd November episode of SmackDown and addressed the chances of Brock Lesnar coming back.

I don’t really put any thought into that at this time because it’s not a subject that is going to resolve itself by Survivor Series or by the end of the year, therefore it is not on the radar of things to address.”
